Provenance of Kalahari Sand: Paleoweathering and recycling in a linked fluvial-aeolian system

Eduardo Garzanti et al.

Summary: The Kalahari Basin's aeolian dune sand is mainly composed of quartz, with durable heavy minerals, distinguishing it from coastal dunefields in Namibia and Angola. The western Kalahari sand sea has a unique quartz-rich feldspatho-quartzose composition, indicating first-cycle provenance from the Damara Belt and Mesoproterozoic terranes. Composition varies at the edges of the sand sea, with Proterozoic supply locally and basaltic detritus dominant near Victoria Falls. Multiple episodes of fluvial and aeolian recycling have led to the current landscape, reflecting past weathering processes.

Late Quaternary Drainage Rearrangement Prevents the Vegetation Development in the La Tatacoa Intermontane Basin of the Colombian Andes

D. H. Souza et al.

Summary: The Tatacoa Desert, located between the Central and Eastern Cordilleras in southern Colombian Andes, has a semi-arid environment despite relatively high annual precipitation. This aridification is believed to be caused by drainage reorganization during the Late Pleistocene, leading to a water deficit in the desert. The study also reveals high susceptibility to erosion in Tatacoa rocks, particularly in areas related to geological structures. These findings are important for understanding water resources and vegetation development in the region.

The post-Caledonian thermo-tectonic evolution of Fennoscandia

Paul F. Green et al.

Summary: The evolution of Fennoscandia following the collapse of the Caledonian mountains has been a subject of debate. By considering evidence of formerly present rocks, a more complete understanding of the geological evolution has been obtained. The results reveal a history involving repeated episodes of burial and exhumation, along with significant regional peneplains and vertical displacements.

Episodic kilometre-scale burial and exhumation and the importance of missing section

Paul Green et al.

Summary: The incompleteness of the stratigraphical record has been well studied, and it has been found that significant sections of rock have been deposited and subsequently removed within relatively short time intervals. These episodes have been observed in various regions that are considered free of tectonic influences, and their importance in shaping the geological history and landscape cannot be ignored.

Discussion: Extracting thermal history from low temperature thermochronology. A comment on recent exchanges between Vermeesch and Tian and Gallagher and Ketcham

Paul Green et al.

Summary: Recent discussions on extracting thermal histories from low temperature thermochronology data fail to address key limitations of system response. Geological evidence is essential to define periods of cooling and reheating, and assumptions of slow continuous cooling may not be appropriate. A revised approach focusing on data information is recommended.

Peneplains and tectonics in North-East Greenland after opening of the North-East Atlantic

Johan M. Bonow et al.

Summary: Elevated plateaus with deeply incised valleys characterize the landscape of North-East Greenland, which consists of two dominant erosion surfaces - the Upper Planation Surface (UPS) and the Lower Planation Surface (LPS). These surfaces were formed at different times, with UPS graded to base level following the eruption of Palaeogene basalts, and LPS forming after mid-Miocene lavas were deposited. The stepped landscape and elevated topography in the region were shaped by late Neogene tectonic uplift.

Cenozoic Dynamic Topography of Madagascar

S. N. Stephenson et al.

Summary: The regional uplift of Madagascar is proposed to be generated and maintained by mantle dynamical processes. Through a combined analysis of multiple observational constraints, it is suggested that around 1 km of topography was formed during the Neogene period. Studies on rare earth element concentrations in Neogene rocks indicate partial melting of the mantle occurred at varying depths and temperatures.

Fjord network in Namibia: A snapshot into the dynamics of the late Paleozoic glaciation

Pierre Dietrich et al.

Summary: Research has shown that U-shaped valleys in northwestern Namibia from the late Paleozoic ice age represent intact fjord-network morphologies, providing insight into ancient ice dynamics and climate regulation. The preserved glacial morphology in this region allows for reconstruction of past ice thicknesses and glacier dynamics. Fjords likely played a crucial role in both glacier dynamics and organic carbon sequestration during this icehouse period.

Growing topography due to contrasting rock types in a tectonically dead landscape

Daniel Peifer et al.

Summary: This study reveals that in a humid subtropical, high-relief post-orogenic landscape in Brazil, denudation rates are negatively correlated with topographic relief, channel steepness, and modern precipitation rates. Resistant rocks denude more slowly than more erodible rock units, and the efficiency of fluvial erosion varies primarily due to these bedrock differences. Variations in erodibility continue to drive contrasts in rates of denudation in a tectonically inactive landscape evolving for hundreds of millions of years.
