Molecular mechanisms of solid bitumen and vitrinite reflectance suppression explored using hydrous pyrolysis of artificial source rock

Margaret M. Sanders et al.

Summary: The commonly used thermal maturity calibration parameter, mean random vitrinite reflectance (R-o), is found to be suppressed in samples containing a high proportion of liptinite macerals. Raman and micro-Fourier transform infrared (mu-FTIR) analyses reveal different suppression mechanisms for vitrinite and solid bitumen. These findings suggest that the use of solid bitumen R-o for maturity calibration in liptinite-rich samples may result in misleading indicators.

Relating systematic compositional variability to the textural occurrence of solid bitumen in shales

M. Rebecca Stokes et al.

Summary: This study uses Raman spectroscopic data and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images to analyze the composition and texture of solid bitumen, as well as its association with minerals. The results show that increasing temperature and experimental duration lead to higher aromaticity and decreased compositional variability of solid bitumen. In terms of texture and composition, coarser-grained solid bitumen has higher but less variable aromaticity compared to thinner, more intimately associated solid bitumen. The study also suggests a link between solid bitumen porosity development, molecular composition, and the textural relationships of the organic matter within the whole rock.

Organic geochemical compositions of Mesoproterozoic source rocks in the Yanliao Rift, Northern China

Daofu Song et al.

Summary: The organic-rich Mesoproterozoic rocks from the Yanliao Rift in Northern China, specifically the Xiamaling and Hongshuizhuang formations, exhibit unique molecular compositions that suggest the presence of special ancient microbes during the Middle Mesoproterozoic era. These rocks contain distinct biomarkers, such as 13 alpha(n-alkyl)-tricyclic terpanes (13 alpha NATTs) and drimanes, indicating a different microflora compared to Phanerozoic bitumens. Additionally, the presence of elevated C-19 and C-20 regular tricyclic terpanes, rearranged hopanes, and low maturity indicators points towards a specific prokaryote source in the Mesoproterozoic sea.

Algal origin of sponge sterane biomarkers negates the oldest evidence for animals in the rock record

Ilya Bobrovskiy et al.

Summary: The earliest fossils of animal-like organisms have been pushed back into the latest Ediacaran period, as it was found that the biomarkers 24-isopropylcholestane and 24-n-propylcholestane can be generated from algal C-29 sterol in experiments simulating diagenetic processes. This undermines their status as sponge biomarkers and suggests they may have formed through geological methylation of chlorophyte algae sterols in Neoproterozoic sediments.

Elemental composition of dispersed vitrinite in marine Jurassic source rocks of the Vulcan Sub-basin, Australia: Implications for vitrinite reflectance suppression

M. Faiz et al.

Summary: Using EPMA to analyze dispersed vitrinites in marine Jurassic rocks, it was found that the hydrogen content of the vitrinites is anomalously high and they may have more petroleum generation potential than previously thought. The FAMM analysis confirmed the suppression of vitrinite reflectance in Jurassic rocks, highlighting implications for petroleum exploration using vitrinite reflectance data.
