Evaluation of onset, cessation and seasonal precipitation of the Southeast Asia rainy season in CMIP5 regional climate models and HighResMIP global climate models

Mugni Hadi Hariadi et al.

Summary: Representing the rainy season of the maritime continent poses a challenge for global and regional climate models, with high-resolution global climate models from the HighResMIP experiment showing better performance than regional climate models based on CMIP5. HighResMIP models simulate the onset date and total precipitation of the rainy season in Southeast Asia more accurately, while HighResSST experiment performs similarly to low-resolution models in simulating monsoon characteristics.

More intense daily precipitation in CORDEX-SEA regional climate models than their forcing global climate models over Southeast Asia

Phuong-Loan Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of regional climate models in simulating rainfall over Southeast Asia and finds that while these models can reproduce complexities in the spatial distribution of seasonal rainfall, they generally have a larger wet bias compared to global climate models. The study also suggests that the ability of the models to simulate precipitation in the region depends more on the setup of the regional climate models themselves rather than their associated global climate models.

Climate analogue and future appearance of novel climate in Southeast Asia

Tuyet Nguyen-Thi et al.

Summary: This study found a trend of climatic relocation towards warmer regions for the five big cities in Southeast Asia in the future under the regional ensemble experiment, with new climate areas mainly concentrated in low-elevation, coastal, equatorial regions, and islands. The proportion of novel climate areas over SEA was less than 2% under the RCP4.5 scenario, but increased significantly to 24% and 21% under RCP8.5 for the ensemble regional and global experiments, respectively.

Attribution of typhoon-induced torrential precipitation in Central Vietnam, October 2020

Linh N. Luu et al.

Summary: In October 2020, Central Vietnam experienced heavy rain and flooding due to tropical depressions and typhoons, resulting in significant casualties and economic losses. While the extreme rainfall event was not significantly influenced by human-induced climate change, investing in disaster risk reduction for this type of hazard is crucial given the scale of damage. More climate change impact investigations on extreme events in the future are needed to enhance adaptation and mitigation efforts.

Impacts of the Madden-Julian oscillation on precipitation extremes in Indonesia

Fadhlil R. Muhammad et al.

Summary: The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) significantly influences the frequency of extreme precipitation events in Indonesia during the rainy season, with varying impacts across regions. The probability of extreme precipitation events is attributed to changes in horizontal moisture flux convergence induced by MJO, providing predictability for daily extreme precipitation in Indonesia.

Summary: The research indicates that rainfall extremes in Java Island, Indonesia are influenced not only by seasonal and intraseasonal variability, but also by convectively coupled equatorial waves on a shorter time scale, significantly impacting the probability of extreme rainfall events.

Low Pressure Systems and Extreme Precipitation in Southeast and East Asian Monsoon Regions

Yujia You et al.

Summary: This study investigates the physical mechanisms behind summer rainfall extremes in Southeast and East Asian monsoon regions, focusing on the impact of excessive-rain-producing low pressure systems (LPSs). Analysis reveals that changes in LPS tracks are closely related to historical extreme rainfall trends from 1979-2018, with northeast-moving terrestrial LPSs leading to dipole extreme rainfall trends in central vs. southern China, and northward-recurving marine LPSs affecting eastern China coast vs. the South China Sea. These trends are driven dynamically by weakening monsoonal southwesterlies and eastward retreat of the subtropical high, likely due to anthropogenic forcings.

Precipitation Biases in the ECMWF Integrated Forecasting System

David A. Lavers et al.

Summary: The study investigates biases in precipitation forecasts from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Integrated Forecasting System (IFS). It shows that IFS exhibits wet biases on average globally and these biases are dependent on observed precipitation. Southeast Asia has a wet bias in summer and precipitation is overestimated by 31.0% on forecast day 3.

Summary: The study found an increasing drought risk in the Southeast Asian monsoon region, with anthropogenic influences increasing the likelihood of extreme drought occurrences in historical simulations. Future projected severe and extreme drought risks are expected to exceed natural changes under all scenarios.

Comparison of CMIP6 and CMIP5 model performance in simulating historical precipitation and temperature in Bangladesh: a preliminary study

Mohammad Kamruzzaman et al.

Summary: The study assessed the relative performance of global climate models (GCMs) from CMIP5 and CMIP6 in simulating rainfall and temperature over Bangladesh, with MIROC5 identified as the most skillful CMIP5 GCM and ACCESS-CM2 as the most skillful CMIP6 GCM. Overall, CMIP6 MME showed significant improvement compared to CMIP5 MME, particularly in simulating cold season rainfall and temperature in higher elevated areas. The study suggests the potential for future research on climate change risk assessment, despite inconsistencies in the added value of simulations among the different climate models used in this research.

A Performance Evaluation of Potential Intensity over the Tropical Cyclone Passage to South Korea Simulated by CMIP5 and CMIP6 Models

Doo-Sun R. Park et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the model-simulated Potential Intensity (PI) of tropical cyclones affecting South Korea (KOR PI) and the entire western North Pacific basin (WNP PI) using CMIP5 and CMIP6 models. Results show that CMIP6 models exhibit significantly improved performance for KOR PI compared to CMIP5 models in terms of pattern correlations and bias-removed root mean square errors, indicating a better capture of thermodynamic conditions along the path of tropical cyclones affecting South Korea.
