Impacts of Land Use Change and Atmospheric CO2 on Gross Primary Productivity (GPP), Evaporation, and Climate in Southern Amazon

Luiz F. C. Rezende et al.

Summary: Recent publications suggest that the Amazon Rainforest may act as a carbon source rather than a carbon sink in certain regions, and deforestation may reduce its role as a moisture supplier to other areas. This study used dynamic global vegetation models to analyze the impacts of elevated CO2 and land use change on primary productivity and evaporation in the southern Amazon. The results indicate that increased CO2 levels may offset the effects of deforestation, leading to an increase in primary productivity, while land use change reduces evaporation.

Amazon rainforest deforestation influenced by clandestine and regular roadway network

Patricia Bittencourt Tavares das Neves et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of clandestine and regular road networks on Amazon forest deforestation and uses a time series analysis to predict deforestation trends over the next three decades. The results suggest that deforestation will continue to intensify, albeit with decreasing rates of forest loss over a ten-year period.

Summary: This study conducted an inter-comparison performance evaluation of the newly developed Brazilian Atmospheric Model against four S2S prediction project models, with ECMWF performing the best in precipitation anomaly prediction. CPTEC showed competitive performance in MJO predictions compared to the other models.

Summary: Trend analysis of meteorological parameters in Calabar, Southern Nigeria showed an overall increasing trend in most parameters, with significant increases in maximum temperature, atmospheric pressure, and field strength. Relative humidity and minimum temperature exhibited a decreasing trend, albeit non-significant changes.

Water balance partitioning for ecosystem service assessment. A case study in the Amazon

Enrico Casagrande et al.

Summary: Rainforests play a crucial role in regulating the water cycle and supporting ecosystem services, but are currently threatened by land-use changes such as deforestation. Comprehensive assessments considering various factors of the water cycle can provide a better understanding of the impact of different land-use types on ecosystem services.

Amazonia as a carbon source linked to deforestation and climate change

Luciana Gatti et al.

Summary: Studies show that total carbon emissions are higher in eastern Amazonia compared to the western part, mainly due to fire emissions. Climate change and deforestation have led to increased ecosystem stress, more frequent fires, and higher carbon emissions in eastern Amazon.

Deforestation and climate change are projected to increase heat stress risk in the Brazilian Amazon

Beatriz Fatima Alves de Oliveira et al.

Summary: The complete savannization of the Amazon Basin would exacerbate the impact of climate change on local heat exposure, increasing the risk to human health according to climate model projections. Deforestation and land use change can influence local temperature and climate. The study found that by 2100, more than 11 million people will be exposed to extreme heat stress as a result of the savannization of the Amazon Basin, particularly in Northern Brazil and among the most socially vulnerable populations.

Changing El Nino-Southern Oscillation in a warming climate

Wenju Cai et al.

Summary: This review discusses the global climatic implications of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and highlights projected increases in ENSO magnitude, rainfall, and sea surface temperature variability under anthropogenic warming. It also emphasizes the importance of understanding ENSO dynamics and highlights advancements in modeling and simulations to reduce uncertainties in future projections.

CO2 physiological effect can cause rainfall decrease as strong as large-scale deforestation in the Amazon

Gilvan Sampaio et al.

Summary: The study systematically compares the effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations and deforestation on Amazon rainfall, finding that both scenarios result in equivalent average annual rainfall reductions above the observed variability. The mechanisms behind the rainfall decreases in the two scenarios are different, highlighting the need for further research on the physiological effects of eCO2 on moisture fluxes in tropical forests.

Evaluation of climate simulations produced with the Brazilian global atmospheric model version 1.2

Caio A. S. Coelho et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of the Brazilian Global Atmospheric Model in simulating climate features at different spatial resolutions. The model successfully reproduced many observed temperature, atmospheric circulation, and precipitation climatological features, although with some identified biases related to cloud-radiation interactions and precipitation characteristics. The model's ability to represent inter-annual precipitation variability was found to be linked to the accurate representation of ENSO teleconnections.
