Protective Effects of Natural Polysaccharides on Intestinal Barrier Injury: A Review

Jiaying Huo et al.

Summary: This review examines the protective effects of natural polysaccharides (NPs) as adjuvant therapy for diseases caused by intestinal barrier injury (IBI). NPs are found to minimize oxidative stress, inflammation, and malignant growth, making them a potential treatment option for IBI-related diseases. The review discusses the potential mechanisms of NPs in directly maintaining intestinal barrier integrity and indirectly regulating intestinal immunity and microbiota. It also highlights the structure-activity relationships of polysaccharides and the potential challenges associated with using NPs in the treatment of IBI-induced intestinal diseases.

Bioactive and technological properties of an α-D-glucan synthesized by Weissella cibaria PDER21

Mustafa Tahsin Yilmaz et al.

Summary: A slimy-mucinous-type colony of EPS-producing Weissella cibaria PDER21 was isolated and identified. The EPS was found to be a glucan type homopolysaccharide composed of glucose monomers. It exhibited superior thermal stability and antioxidant activity, as well as good water binding capacity and solubility. The findings suggest that the glucan PDER21 has great potential for use in the food industry.

Structure-activity relationship of antioxidant polysaccharides from Huangshui based on the HPLC fingerprint combined with chemometrics methods

Jiaying Huo et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between the HPLC fingerprints of Huangshui polysaccharides (HSPs) and their antioxidant activities in vitro for the first time using chemometrics method. The findings showed that the elution method, monosaccharide composition, purity, protein contents, and molecular weights of HSPs all significantly affected their antioxidant activities.

The role of short-chain fatty acids in intestinal barrier function, inflammation, oxidative stress, and colonic carcinogenesis

Pinyi Liu et al.

Summary: Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), produced during bacterial fermentation of dietary fiber, play crucial roles in regulating inflammation, carcinogenesis, intestinal barrier function, and oxidative stress. Their signaling mechanisms involve histone acetylation promotion and activation of G-protein-coupled receptors. SCFAs have a wide range of positive effects and show high therapeutic potential in human-related diseases.
