Chitosan-reinforced PHB hydrogel and aerogel monoliths fabricated by phase separation with the solvent-exchange method

Jiseon Kang et al.

Summary: In this study, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) organogel monoliths were prepared using nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) and loaded with chitosan (CS). The resulting composite hydrogels exhibited excellent injectability and thixotropy, and could be freeze-dried into composite aerogels with improved compressive modulus/collapse strength. The presence of CS also affected the gel crystallization and structure, and the drug release behavior was influenced by the charge interactions between drugs and CS.

Herb-drug interaction in the protective effect of Alpinia officinarum against gastric injury induced by indomethacin based on pharmacokinetic, tissue distribution and excretion studies in rats

Xuguang Zhang et al.

Summary: Alpinia officinarum alters the pharmacokinetic parameters of indomethacin, reducing its systemic exposure and increasing elimination. Co-administration of A. officinarum does not reduce indomethacin accumulation in target tissues, but accelerates excretion of indomethacin and its metabolites. This suggests that A. officinarum may have a gastrointestinal protective effect through interactions with indomethacin in rats.

New insights into physicochemical aspects involved in the formation of polyelectrolyte complexes based on chitosan and dextran sulfate

Suzana Goncalves Carvalho et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the influence of pH, molecular weight, and polymeric proportion on the formation of polyelectrolyte complexes based on chitosan:dextran sulfate. Results showed that nanoparticles with an excess of polycation formed aggregates, while an excess of dextran sulfate reduced the size of the particles. The graph of zeta potential as a function of pH is a promising tool in the choice of polymers and a better pH condition for the development of polyelectrolyte complexes.

Biodegradable polyelectrolyte complexes of chitosan and partially crosslinked dextran phosphate with potential for biomedical applications

Sergey O. Solomevich et al.

Summary: Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) formed by mixing oppositely charged polyelectrolyte solutions without organic solvents and chemical crosslinkers are potential carriers for drug delivery. Biodegradable antimicrobial polyelectrolyte complexes of chitosan - dextran phosphate (DPCS) containing cefazolin were developed, showing good in vitro biocompatibility, pH sensitivity and sustained drug release, as well as antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The tunable degradation behavior and high antibacterial efficacy of drug-loaded hydrogels make them promising materials for biomedical applications.

Summary: Nanoscale polyelectrolyte complex materials have been extensively studied for their potential applications in protocell, drug carriers, imaging, and catalysis. By utilizing reactive flash nanoprecipitation (RFNP), a more homogeneous mixing and preparation process for these materials has been achieved, resulting in stable nanoscale complexes with controllable size and narrow size distribution. The method allows for continuous and tunable production of these complexes, showing promise for practical translation in the future.
