Efficient sugar production from plant biomass: Current status, challenges, and future directions

J. Y. Zhu et al.

Summary: Lignocellulosic plant biomass is a sustainable alternative resource for the production of fuels and chemicals. The sugar platform is a promising approach for converting cellulose and hemicelluloses in plant biomass into targeted products. However, the natural recalcitrance of lignocellulose makes efficient and sustainable sugar production a challenge.

Integrated lignocellulosic biorefinery: Gateway for production of second generation ethanol and value added products

Amisha Patel et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for alternative renewable resources due to depleting petroleum sources has brought attention to lignocellulosic biomass as a potential source for second generation ethanol and value-added products. Efficient utilization of all three components of lignocellulosic biomass and the importance of pretreatment methods and biorefinery processes are key factors in the economic viability of cellulosic ethanol production. Biotechnology tools and process engineering play crucial roles in the development of integrated processes for biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials from lignocellulosic biomass.

A mechanistic study of cellulase adsorption onto lignin

Lan Yao et al.

Summary: The study explored the impact of lignin composition on cellulase adsorption, showing that G-type lignin had the most detrimental effect. The results provide useful information on the mechanism of cellulase adsorption onto lignin using DHPs as lignin model compounds.
