Morphological control and interfacial compatibilization of fully biobased PLA/ENR blends via partial crosslinking ENR with sebacic acid

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel strategy to tailor the phase morphology and interfacial adhesion of the PLA/ENR blend by partially crosslinking ENR with sebacic acid. The partially crosslinked sebacic acid modified ENRs (mENRs) were prepared by mixing ENR with SA and a catalyst. The phase morphology and interfacial adhesion of the PLA/mENR blend were finely tuned by adjusting the crosslinking degree of mENR. The resulting PLA/mENR blend exhibited drastically enhanced toughness compared to neat PLA, following a toughening mechanism of internal mENR cavitation-induced matrix shear yielding and plastic deformation.

A feasible and versatile strategy to endow rubbers with self-healing based on reversible non-covalent interactions: A concept of self-healing masterbatch

Zhongjie Zheng et al.

Summary: The current mainstream strategy for achieving self-healing in commercial rubbers is to modify rubber molecules with essential functional groups through chemical modifications. However, different structures of rubber molecules require different self-healing mechanisms, resulting in complex and varied chemical modifications. In this study, we propose a concept of self-healing masterbatch that can effectively impart self-healing ability to rubber matrix through a simple processing method. By grafting reaction between natural rubber and 2-methacrylic acid, we design a rubber masterbatch equipped with a mass of carboxyl groups. The rubber masterbatch can then be mixed with rubber matrix and ZnO must be added to introduce Zn2+ through its neutralization reaction with the masterbatch. After controlled peroxide-induced vulcanization, the chains of the masterbatch are grafted onto the chains of the rubber matrix, forming a reversible Zn2+ crosslinking network. Using this method, natural rubber, styrene butadiene rubber, and cis-polybutadiene rubber successfully achieve considerable self-healing ability, with a self-healing efficiency of over 90%. Furthermore, the self-healing masterbatch can recover its adhesion and be reused to bond cements together through reversible non-covalent interactions with inorganic substrates, demonstrating dynamic reversible adhesion. We hope that this concept of self-healing masterbatch can provide a feasible and versatile approach for the preparation of self-healing rubbers based on reversible non-covalent interactions.
