Impact of Ergothioneine, Hercynine, and Histidine on Oxidative Degradation of Hyaluronan and Wound Healing

Katarina Valachova et al.

Summary: The study found that ergothioneine can reduce the degree of hyaluronan radical degradation, while histidine has a potent effect in scavenging (OH)-O-center dot radicals. Animal experiments showed that adding ergothioneine, hercynine, or histidine to chitosan/hyaluronan membranes can more effectively treat ischemic skin wounds in rabbits.

Hemostatic Needles: Controlling Hemostasis Time by a Catecholamine Oxidative Pathway

Mikyung Shin et al.

Summary: This study introduced a self-sealing hemostatic needle inspired by mussel adhesive polysaccharide, chitosan-catechol, with the self-sealing time for complete hemostasis depending on the oxidation pathway of the conjugated catechol. High-temperature oxidation weakens the attachment force on the needle surface, facilitating transfer to hemorrhaging sites, while low-temperature oxidation strengthens the attachment force, leading to continued bleeding.

In vitro biological response of human osteoblasts in 3D chitosan sponges with controlled degree of deacetylation and molecular weight

Mousumi Sukul et al.

Summary: The DDA and Mw of chitosan sponges affect adhesion, growth, and differentiation of primary human osteoblasts. Higher DDA promotes the secretion of bone growth factors, while lower DDA promotes the secretion of other proteins. The variations in cellular responses to different chitosan sponges suggest potential for individual tailoring of desired responses in guided bone regeneration.

Low-temperature 3D printing of collagen and chitosan composite for tissue engineering

Hairui Suo et al.

Summary: By controlling the temperature, a series of tunable hybrid collagen/chitosan bioinks with significantly improved printability were prepared and successfully printed into scaffolds with regulated properties. Chitosan could decrease the swelling ratio of the printed scaffolds, while the degradation rate increased with collagen proportion, and the values of Young's modulus and tensile strength increased with chitosan proportion. Scaffolds containing 2% (m/v) collagen and 2% (m/v) chitosan showed a homogeneous and compact honeycomb-like structure, demonstrating the strengthening effect of chitosan.

Mechanical Stabilization of Alginate Hydrogel Fiber and 3D Constructs by Mussel-Inspired Catechol Modification

Kyoungryong Kim et al.

Summary: A stabilization strategy for alginate hydrogel fibers through mussel-inspired catechol chemistry was reported, resulting in mechanically strong 3D constructs. Wet-spinning of catechol-tethered alginate hydrogel fibers enabled the enhancement of tensile strength of a single fiber through covalent crosslinking. The 'gluing' capability of catechol stabilized the interface among the fibers, retaining the shape fidelity of the 3D constructs and encapsulating cell density during culture.
