Chemically Accelerated Stabilization of a Cellulose-Lignin Precursor as a Route to High Yield Carbon Fiber Production

Nguyen-Duc Le et al.

Summary: Producing carbon fiber from bio-based or renewable resources has attracted much attention in recent years. The stabilization process, which transforms the precursor fiber to withstand high temperatures, is a critical step. This study used thermogravimetric analysis to explore different stabilization profiles and investigated the influence of atmosphere, cellulose-lignin composition, and catalysts on carbon yield and stabilization rate. It was found that a phosphorus-based flame retardant greatly enhanced the char yield, doubling the amount produced.

Continuous Stabilization and Carbonization of a Lignin-CellulosePrecursor to Carbon Fiber

Andreas Bengtsson et al.

Summary: This study investigates the continuous conversion of lignin-cellulose precursor fibers (PFs) for the production of carbon fibers (CFs) using renewable raw materials. The results suggest that continuous conversion of PFs under industrial conditions is feasible and can produce CFs with certain mechanical properties. The performance of CFs can be further improved by optimizing the fiber tension, residence time, and temperature distribution.

yy Effect of pre-oxidation temperature and heating rate on the microstructure of lignin carbon fibers

Guosheng Jia et al.

Summary: Lignin-based carbon fiber, a biopolymer with high carbon content, is an important research direction. Pre-oxidation of lignin fibers can prevent fiber fusion and maintain fiber structure during carbonization. The effects of pre-oxidation temperature and heating rate were studied, showing that pre-oxidized lignin fibers with controllable diameter and thickness can be prepared. These fibers can be further converted into carbon fibers with porous morphology, suitable for applications in sensors, catalytic materials, and other fields.

Summary: The study successfully synthesized hydrogels using lignin, a non-valorized biopolymer, crosslinked with PEGDGE. The ratio of crosslinker used influenced the structural and chemical properties of the resulting hydrogels, with increased crosslinker amount leading to smaller pore size and higher swelling capacity. Paracetamol release test showed higher drug diffusion for hydrogels produced with a lignin:PEGDGE ratio of 1:1.

Summary: In this study, softwood lignin was chemically modified with fatty acids and subjected to UV-triggered oxidative reactions to form stable oxidatively cross-linked networks, enabling the conversion of lignin into heat-resistant carbon fibers. The use of oleic acid-functionalized lignin showed faster oxidative cross-linking compared to stearic acid-functionalized lignin, potentially reducing manufacturing costs for carbon fiber production.
