Addition of 1, 4-α-glucan branching enzyme during the preparation of raw dough reduces the retrogradation and increases the slowly digestible fraction of starch in cooked noodles

Xiangqing Ji et al.

Summary: Using a cold-active 1,4-alpha-glucan branching enzyme (BlBE) to modify wheat dough significantly reduces the hardness and gumminess of noodles, while increasing their resilience and cohesiveness. It also decreases retrogradation and enhances the slowly digestible starch fraction in the noodles.

Polysaccharide-coated porous starch-based oral carrier for paclitaxel: Adsorption and sustained release in colon

Beibei Zhao et al.

Summary: A porous starch-based carrier coated with chitosan-phytic acid was developed to enhance drug delivery to the colon. The results showed improved drug loading and entrapment efficiency by size/shape matching and adsorption force. Chitosan-phytic acid provided a second protection and enhanced drug release in the colon. The study also confirmed non-covalent interactions between starch and the drug.

An Innovative Short-Clustered Maltodextrin as Starch Substitute for Ameliorating Postprandial Glucose Homeostasis

Haocun Kong et al.

Summary: The study showed that using a 1,4-alpha-glucan branching enzyme (GBE) to reassemble starch molecules created a novel short-clustered maltodextrin (SCMD) with dense internal framework and shortened external chains, leading to reduced digestibility and improved postprandial glucose homeostasis. Intake of SCMD resulted in a 22.3% decrease in glycemic peak and a 40.5% lower insulin response in mice, suggesting its potential as a meaningful strategy for diabetes management.

Starch modified alginate nanoparticles for drug delivery application

Deepa Thomas et al.

Summary: In this study, starch-modified alginate nanoparticles were developed for drug delivery application using a green facile technique. The nanoparticles demonstrated pH-dependent drug release characteristics and biocompatibility against L929 fibroblast cell lines. The preliminary investigation suggests the developed nanoparticles as a promising candidate for drug delivery application.

Highly branched corn starch: Preparation, encapsulation, and release of ascorbic acid

Zixuan Gu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to prepare a novel supporting carrier HBCS and investigate its encapsulation property with AA. The results showed that HBCS could serve as a potential highly branched carrier and the formation of HBCS-AA inclusion complex was confirmed by DSC. Moreover, the release of AA followed the pseudo-Fickian diffusion mechanism and its photostability and thermostability were moderately enhanced.

Two 1,4-?-glucan branching enzymes successively rearrange glycosidic bonds: A novel synergistic approach for reducing starch digestibility

Luxi Yu et al.

Summary: Enzymatically rearranging α-1,4 and α-1,6 glycosidic bonds in starch using a two-step modification process catalyzed by different GBE enzymes effectively reduces the digestibility of starch. The dual GBE modification process results in increased branching density, more abundant short branches, and shorter external chains in the modified starch, offering an efficient strategy for regulating starch digestibility.
