Risk factors for vancomycin-associated acute kidney injury: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Jee Yun Kim et al.

Summary: This systematic literature review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the risk factors for vancomycin-associated acute kidney injury (AKI) incidence. The results showed that factors such as race, obesity, treatment duration, and serum vancomycin trough level were associated with an increased risk of vancomycin-associated AKI. Additionally, comorbidities and the use of certain nephrotoxic drugs were also identified as risk factors for AKI.

Association of vancomycin plus piperacillin-tazobactam with early changes in creatinine versus cystatin C in critically ill adults: a prospective cohort study

Todd A. Miano et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the combination of vancomycin and piperacillin-tazobactam may increase the risk of acute kidney injury, but does not significantly affect alternative kidney biomarkers, dialysis, or mortality. This supports the hypothesis that the effects of vancomycin and piperacillin-tazobactam on creatinine represent pseudotoxicity.

Summary: The study found that piperacillin/tazobactam increased the risk of AKI in healthcare-acquired infection treatment, while cefepime and meropenem increased the risk of CDI relative to piperacillin/tazobactam.

Nephrotoxicity from Vancomycin Combined with Piperacillin-Tazobactam: A Comprehensive Review

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the combination of vancomycin with piperacillin-tazobactam (VPT) is associated with increased nephrotoxicity. Strategies to minimize the risk of toxicity include antimicrobial stewardship, monitoring of kidney function, and the use of novel biomarkers for predicting and managing AKI.
