Cigarette Smoke and Nicotine-Containing Electronic-Cigarette Vapor Downregulate Lung WWOX Expression, Which Is Associated with Increased Severity of Murine Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Zhenguo Zeng et al.

Summary: Chronic cigarette smoking is known to increase risk for ARDS, but the risks associated with chronic e-cigarette use are largely unknown. The WWOX gene is highly susceptible to genotoxic stress from environmental exposures and exposure to nicotine-containing e-cigarette vapor resulted in a decrease in WWOX mRNA levels. The downregulation of WWOX may play a role in the increased risk for ARDS in chronic smokers and potentially in chronic e-cigarette users in the future.

Autophagy in inflammation, infection, and immunometabolism

Vojo Deretic

Summary: Autophagy is a crucial cellular protection mechanism that impacts various diseases when disrupted, including infections, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. It plays a role in clearing harmful substances in and out of cells, protecting against inflammatory damage. The article focuses on the role of autophagy in inflammation, as well as its intersections with immunity, metabolism, and organelle functions.

mTOR-driven glycolysis governs induction of innate immune responses by bronchial epithelial cells exposed to the bacterial component flagellin

I Ramirez-Moral et al.

Summary: Human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells utilize the mTOR pathway for metabolic reprogramming to modulate activation of the respiratory epithelium and secretion of immune mediators, identifying mTOR as a potential therapeutic target for modulating mucosal immunity during bacterial infections.

WWOX activation by toosendanin suppresses hepatocellular carcinoma metastasis through JAK2/Stat3 and Wnt/beta-catenin signaling

Tianfeng Yang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that toosendanin (TSN) may be a novel druggable WWOX agonist for metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients, showing significant anti-proliferative and anti-metastatic effects on HCC cells in a WWOX-dependent manner. TSN regulates multiple signaling pathways by altering their interactions with WWOX, providing potential therapeutic implications for HCC treatment.
