Cochlear Immune Response in Presbyacusis: a Focus on Dysregulation of Macrophage Activity

Summary: Age-related hearing loss, known as presbyacusis, is a chronic degenerative disorder affecting many older individuals. This condition involves degeneration in sensory and non-sensory cells, as well as changes in the cochlear microenvironment. Recent studies have highlighted the potential critical role of macrophages in maintaining the functional integrity of the cochlea in the context of age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Limited research has been conducted on the mechanisms underlying macrophage dysfunction in aged cochleae, offering the possibility of developing therapeutic strategies for treating presbyacusis and sensorineural hearing loss.

The Time Course of Monocytes Infiltration After Acoustic Overstimulation

Additionally, the gene encoding C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 was significantly upregulated as early as 3 hours after acoustic overstimulation.
