Functional analysis of pheromone receptor repertoire in the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda

Hao Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, six PRs were identified through transcriptome sequencing in the fall armyworm, showing varying responses to major and minor sex pheromone components. It was confirmed that S. frugiperda uses both SfruOR56 and SfruOR62 to detect the minor sex pheromone component Z7-12:Ac. Additionally, four sensilla types responsible for detecting pheromone compounds were characterized using single sensillum recording.

Summary: The study identified the sex pheromone components of the fall armyworm using gas chromatography and other methods, and found that Z9-14:Ac and Z7-12:Ac are the principal sex pheromone components. This research provides important insights for the control and management of the fall armyworm.

CRISPR/Cas9 mediates efficient site-specific mutagenesis of the odorant receptor co-receptor (Orco) in the malaria vector Anopheles sinensis

You Wang et al.

Summary: This study successfully applied CRISPR/Cas9 mediated knock-in technology to achieve highly efficient, site-specific mutagenesis in Anopheles sinensis. The integration of the EGFP marker gene into the odorant receptor co-receptor (Orco) confirmed Orco as a key mediator of multiple olfactory-driven behaviors in the An. sinensis life cycle, emphasizing its importance as a key molecular target for malaria control. The results also demonstrated that CRISPR/Cas9 is a simple and highly efficient genome editing technique for An. sinensis and could be utilized in developing genetic control tools for this vector.

Mutagenesis of the odorant receptor co-receptor (Orco) reveals severe olfactory defects in the crop pest moth Helicoverpa armigera

Xiao-Bin Fan et al.

Summary: The results of this study indicate that odorant receptors (ORs) play an essential role in pheromone communication, oviposition selection, and larval chemotaxis of Helicoverpa armigera. Inhibiting or silencing the expression of the odorant receptor co-receptor (Orco) could disrupt mate searching and host-seeking behaviors of moth pests.

Genomic and transcriptomic analysis unveils population evolution and development of pesticide resistance in fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda

Furong Gui et al.

Summary: This study focused on the genetic background and pesticide resistance of the fall armyworm (FAW) in China. The results showed that FAWs invaded into China were most likely originated from Africa and had significant genetic differentiation from American populations. Furthermore, specific detoxification genes in FAWs responded to different pesticides.

Comparison of larval performance and oviposition preference ofSpodoptera frugiperdaamong three host plants: Potential risks to potato and tobacco crops

Jing-Fei Guo et al.

Summary: Fall armyworm performed best on maize, with shorter developmental time in the larval stage, longer longevity, and higher reproductive rate in adults. Females showed a preference for ovipositing on maize. However, larvae fed on potato and tobacco had significantly lower survival rates, and various life table parameters were negatively affected in those conditions.

Silencing the odorant coreceptor (Orco) disrupts sex pheromonal communication and feeding responses in Blattella germanica: toward an alternative target for controlling insect-transmitted human diseases

Peng He et al.

Summary: The German cockroach is one of the most severe pests in urban and rural areas with a powerful olfactory system. The study found that Orco plays a pivotal role in both sex pheromone and food-seeking olfactory processes, providing a potential genetic technique for pest control. The RNA interference effect on Orco showed significant behavioral changes in response to volatile sex pheromone and food resources.

Evolutionary importance of intraspecific variation in sex pheromones

Chiara De Pasqual et al.

Summary: Sex pheromones play crucial roles in insects, being both species-recognition signals and factors in mate choice and population evolution. Variations in pheromone communication channels, influenced by multiple factors, can impact mate choice, gene flow, and ultimately species evolution. The complex interactions between intraspecific and interspecific selection forces highlight the need for more comprehensive studies on the evolution of sex pheromone communication.

Latest Developments in Insect Sex Pheromone Research and Its Application in Agricultural Pest Management

Syed Arif Hussain Rizvi et al.

Summary: Insect pheromones, particularly sex pheromones, have been highly successful in controlling low density pest populations and reducing pest populations with minimal impact on their natural enemies. Mass trapping and mating disruption strategies using sex pheromones have significantly decreased the use of conventional insecticides, providing sustainable and eco-friendly pest management in agricultural crops. Recent interdisciplinary research has greatly advanced our understanding of pheromone perception mechanisms and their practical applications in agricultural pest management.
