Transition Metal Non-Oxides as Electrocatalysts: Advantages and Challenges

Chandni Das et al.

Summary: The identification of hydrogen as a green fuel has sparked interest in sustainable development and research in water electrolysis. Transition metal non-oxides (TMNOs) have emerged as efficient electrocatalysts, outperforming transition metal oxides (TMOs). TMNOs can effectively catalyze the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), making them potential replacements for conventional noble metal electrocatalysts. This review discusses the crystal structure, synthesis strategies, and properties of nanostructured TMNOs, as well as the challenges and future prospects of energy conversion and storage materials in advancing the hydrogen economy.

Vanadium-Doping and Interface Engineering for Synergistically Enhanced Electrochemical Overall Water Splitting and Urea Electrolysis

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: The V-doped bimetallic nitrides V-FeNi3N/Ni3N show superior catalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, reducing overpotentials and increasing current density. The use of V-doping and interface engineering enhances water adsorption and regulates kinetic processes, leading to excellent electrolysis performance. Additionally, a urea-assisted two-electrode electrolyzer lowers the cell voltage needed for hydrogen production compared to traditional water electrolysis.
