Inflammatory bowel disease-associated adherent-invasive Escherichia coli have elevated host-defense peptide resistance

Youn Hee Cho et al.

Summary: Adherent-invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC) isolated from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients exhibited higher resistance to antibiotics and host defense peptides. The strains associated with IBD showed slightly increased antibiotic resistance, while Crohn's disease-associated strains exhibited higher resistance to HBD3-mediated killing and ulcerative colitis-associated strains showed significant resistance to LL-37 mediated killing. The resistance to antimicrobial host defense peptides may contribute to the enhanced pathogenesis of AIEC in the initiation or progression of IBD.

The role of two-component regulatory systems in environmental sensing and virulence in Salmonella

Lucindo Cardoso de Pina et al.

Summary: Adaptation to constantly changing environments is a challenge for bacteria, requiring sophisticated strategies to perceive and respond appropriately. The gastrointestinal environment houses trillions of microorganisms, collectively known as microbiota, which play key roles in host health and pathogen resistance. Bacteria, including Salmonella enterica, utilize two-component systems to monitor their environment and regulate behavior, with potential as targets for antivirulence therapeutics against antibiotic-resistant infections.

How the PhoP/PhoQ System Controls Virulence and Mg2+ Homeostasis: Lessons in Signal Transduction, Pathogenesis, Physiology, and Evolution

Eduardo A. Groisman et al.

Summary: The PhoP/PhoQ two-component system is crucial in governing virulence, Mg2+ homeostasis, and resistance to antimicrobial agents in Gram-negative bacteria. The system involves the sensor PhoQ and the transcriptional regulator PhoP, with PhoQ being activated by various signals to promote the phosphorylated state of PhoP. This phosphorylated form controls the expression of hundreds of proteins directly and indirectly, revealing novel forms of signal transduction and the physiological consequences of regulon evolution.
