Experimental evidence shows minor contribution of nitrogen deposition to global forest carbon sequestration

Lena F. Schulte-Uebbing et al.

Summary: Human activities have significantly increased nitrogen deposition onto forests globally, affecting biomass carbon sequestration in different ways across different regions. While nitrogen deposition enhances carbon sequestration in boreal forests, it reduces it in tropical forests, with no impact in the majority of global forests. Overall, the nitrogen-induced carbon sink in aboveground woody biomass only offsets a small portion of the climate impact of N2O emissions.

Driving forces of the efficiency of forest carbon sequestration production: Spatial panel data from the national forest inventory in China

Shiwen Yin et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the dynamic changes and influencing factors of forest carbon sequestration efficiency at the provincial level in China, revealing regional differences in carbon sequestration potential and efficiency. It suggests enhancing carbon sinks in regions with high efficiency and respecting natural laws in regions with low efficiency, as well as promoting forestry technology services.

Terrestrial carbon sinks in China and around the world and their contribution to carbon neutrality

Yuanhe Yang et al.

Summary: Enhancing the terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink is crucial for slowing down the increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration and achieving carbon neutrality. This review summarizes the progress in terrestrial C budget researches, clarifies spatial patterns and drivers of terrestrial C sources and sinks, and examines the role of terrestrial C sinks in achieving carbon neutrality.

Contrasting responses of forest growth and carbon sequestration to heat and drought in the Alps

Ludovica Oddi et al.

Summary: Climate change increases the risk of forest role transition and has important consequences for tree species in the Alps. This study investigates the response of a high-altitude Larix decidua Mill. forest to heat and drought. The results show advancements in phenological development and seasonal trajectories in response to warm spells, but no significant changes in ecosystem gas exchanges during extreme years. However, in 2017, there was a reduction in larch stem growth and a shorter growing season due to drought events and high water deficit.

Cross-biome synthesis of source versus sink limits to tree growth

Antoine Cabon et al.

Summary: Uncertainties in tree carbon allocation to growth limit projections of forest carbon sequestration and response to climate change. Our study reveals widespread decoupling between carbon assimilation and tree growth, driven by varying climatic sensitivities and tree species. Sink control over tree growth becomes more prominent with canopy closure, aridity, and decreasing temperatures.

Altered plant carbon partitioning enhanced forest ecosystem carbon storage after 25 years of nitrogen additions

Brooke A. Eastman et al.

Summary: Decades of atmospheric nitrogen deposition in the northeastern USA have enhanced forest carbon sink by shifting carbon partitioning and reducing the cost of nitrogen acquisition. This study demonstrates how plant responses to nitrogen additions may result in greater carbon storage in both vegetation and soil at the watershed scale.
