Degradation Characteristics of Environment-Friendly Bamboo Fiber Lunch Box Buried in the Soil

Huan Jiang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the degradation behavior of environment-friendly bamboo fiber lunch boxes under indoor soil burial. The weight loss of the boxes increased rapidly with time and they were completely degraded in the soil after 70 days. Microorganisms in the soil decomposed starch, hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin sequentially, and the residual debris was further decomposed into CO2, H2O, and inorganic salts.

Importance of Interfacial Adhesion Condition on Characterization of Plant-Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Composites: A Review

Ching Hao Lee et al.

Summary: Plant fibers have gained popularity due to increasing environmental awareness and are widely used in plant-fibers-reinforced polymer composites. Interfacial adhesion mechanisms play a crucial role in affecting the properties of these composites, with four key interface mechanisms highlighted. The importance of interfacial adhesion condition on the performance of plant fiber polymer composites is emphasized, as physical, thermal properties, and flexural strength are highly dependent on it.

Feng Wu et al.

Summary: Biodegradable polymers have attracted significant attention due to their environmentally friendly compostability. However, challenges remain for their practical application in packaging, particularly in addressing gas/moisture barrier issues. Various strategies have been researched for decades to overcome these challenges, such as chain architecture tailoring, crystallinity, melt blending/multi-layer co-extrusion, nanotechnology, and surface coating. This review focuses on improving the oxygen/water vapor barrier properties of biodegradable polymers and discusses the limitations of current methods and potential solutions.

Exploration of physicochemical properties and molecular interactions between cellulose and high-amylose cornstarch during extrusion processing

Pichmony Ek et al.

Summary: Incorporating high levels of fiber into direct-expanded products poses challenges due to the interaction of starch and fiber, leading to a reduction in expansion. This study explored how cellulose content impacts the physicochemical properties of starch-based extrudates, showing that increased cellulose content significantly reduces expansion ratio and increases crystallinity. The study also found that there is no covalent bonding interaction between starch and fiber after extrusion, and phase separation may occur at high cellulose content, affecting product expansion.
