Acidolysis mechanism of lignin from bagasse during p-toluenesulfonic acid treatment

Chengqi Feng et al.

Summary: By using p-toluenesulfonic acid treatment, lignin was efficiently separated from lignocellulosic biomass. This study investigated the mechanism of lignin acidolysis, evaluated the efficiency and selectivity of lignin depolymerization, and provided important theoretical support for the use of p-TsOH treatment in the clean separation of lignin.

High-purity lignin fractions and nanospheres rich in phenolic hydroxyl and carboxyl groups isolated with alkaline deep eutectic solvent from wheat straw

Xin Yue et al.

Summary: A combined pretreatment based on alkaline deep eutectic solvent (DES) of K2CO3 and glycerol and sequential acid fractionation was developed to extract reactive lignin from wheat straw biomass. This process exhibited excellent purification performance in lignin isolation, and the lignin fractionated at low pH displayed high reactivity.

Multimode ultrasound and ternary deep eutectic solvent sequential pretreatments enhanced the enzymatic saccharification of corncob biomass

Qiannan Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sequential pretreatment of corn cob (CB) using ultrasound (US) in conjunction with ternary deep eutectic solvent (TDES). The results showed that under the optimized conditions, the removal of lignin and hemicellulose from CB was achieved, and the recovery of cellulose was significantly improved. After enzymatic hydrolysis, the yield of glucose and xylose were higher compared to the untreated samples. The scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform mid-infrared spectroscopy results further confirmed the effectiveness of the pretreatment method.

The Effect of Acidic Ternary Deep Eutectic Solvent Treatment on Native Lignin

Zhiwen Wang et al.

Summary: Ternary deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are being explored as a green alternative medium for lignocellulosic biomass processing. Acidic DES systems with alcohols can modify lignin structure and produce low- and high-molecular-weight products that are difficult to recover. Further investigation is needed to understand the effect of these DES systems on lignin.

Comprehensive analysis of important parameters of choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvent pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass

Huanfei Xu et al.

Summary: Choline chloride based deep eutectic solvents have great potential in lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment. Multivariate analysis methods were used to reveal the pretreatment mechanism and found that properties of hydrogen bond donnors and severity of DES had significant influence on the pretreatment effect. Molecular simulation and four-dimensional color graphs were utilized for further optimization of pretreatment conditions to improve economic benefits and energy consumption indicators.

Synergism of sweeping frequency ultrasound and deep eutectic solvents pretreatment for fractionation of sugarcane bagasse and enhancing enzymatic hydrolysis

Qinghua Ji et al.

Summary: The study investigated the synergistic role of ultrasound and deep eutectic solvents in the fractionation of sugarcane bagasse, showing significant improvements in lignin and hemicellulose removal rates. Analytical studies revealed that the proposed pretreatment method effectively destroyed the ultrastructure of the sugarcane bagasse and reduced the cellulose crystallinity. The application of the SFUS + DES pretreatment method was able to improve the removal of lignin and hemicellulose from sugarcane bagasse.
