Integrating Technoeconomic, Environmental, and Safety Criteria in Solvent Screening for Extraction Processes: The Case of Algae Lipid Extraction

Santiago Zapata-Boada et al.

Summary: This study presents a systematic approach to solvent screening, using molecular and process simulation techniques, data analysis, and classification methods to evaluate technoeconomic, environmental, and safety criteria for lipid extraction from wet algae biomass in biofuel production. Out of 88 initial candidates, cyclohexane, limonene, and ethyl tert-butyl ether are identified as potential alternatives to the benchmark solvent, hexane, based on their higher selectivity toward lipids and lower volatility and hazard level. This methodology can be applied to other extraction process applications to evaluate more sustainable alternatives to fossil-derived solvents.

Processing Methodologies of Wet Microalga Biomass Toward Oil Separation: An Overview

Vania Pojo et al.

Summary: Microalgae are seen as a promising alternative source for lipid extraction due to their high potential for synthesizing fatty acids, particularly polyunsaturated ones. Direct extraction from wet biomass could provide economic advantages, but more research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind this process. Most developments in lipid extraction from wet microalgae biomass are currently at a bench-scale level, requiring further large-scale demonstration to confirm their competitiveness.
