Biomass-clay complexes for Sr2+ and Co2+ removal: New insights on sorption and separaation properties of the sorbents

Maria Luciana Montes et al.

Summary: The Co2+ and Sr2+ sorption capacity of an argentine montmorillonite and two biomass-clay complexes were investigated. The biomass-clay complexes exhibited higher Co2+ sorption capacity, while no significant difference was observed in Sr2+ removal. The sorption of these heavy metals occurred on both internal and external surfaces of the sorbents. In the presence of pollutants, the biomass-clay complexes remained in suspension longer than the montmorillonite, suggesting their potential for efficient pollutant sorption.

A comprehensive guide for characterization of adsorbent materials

Leandro Pellenz et al.

Summary: Given the great relevance of adsorption processes, especially for water and wastewater treatment, the development and improvement of adsorbent materials is crucial. Different techniques can provide various physical and chemical information about the materials, enabling not only the identification and quantification of properties but also the study of structure, morphology, and magnetic properties. This comprehensive review serves as a guide for researchers to choose suitable characterization techniques for studying adsorbent materials and their specific needs.

Low shrinkage, mechanically strong polymethylacrylimide aerogels with open-cell structure prepared by freeze-drying

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: Low shrinkage, open-cell structure, and mechanically-strong PMI aerogels were synthesized using a freezing-drying process. Heat treatment reduced the shrinkage of the PMI aerogels. The fabricated aerogels exhibited a network-like structure with high porosity, and increasing the copolymer solid contents improved the compression property.

The influence of soil particle size distribution and clay minerals on ammonium nitrogen in weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth tailing

Xin Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of particle size distribution and clay minerals on ammonia nitrogen pollution caused by weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth tailings. The results indicated that as soil particle size decreases, both soil specific surface area and clay content increase, leading to stronger AN enrichment ability. Clay minerals with different capacities for AN enrichment vary with sampling depth, influencing the distribution of AN in the mine site where a pattern of increase and then decrease in AN content with vertical depth was observed.

The effect of temperature and wetting-drying cycles on soil wettability: Dynamic molecular restructuring processes at the solid-water-air interface

Joerg Bachmann et al.

Summary: The study found significant effects of heat treatment and wetting-drying cycles on the wetting properties of sandy forest soils, with shock-freezing and freeze-drying preserving the wetted state contact angles. XPS analysis confirmed dynamic interfacial molecular restructuring processes, and a second heat treatment after wetting-drying cycles had a distinct impact on contact angle, especially with prior shock-freezing and freeze-drying.
