Multidrug-resistant Elizabethkingia anophelis Septicemia, Meningitis, Ventriculitis, and Hydrocephalus in a Preterm Neonate: A Rare Complication of an Emerging Pathogen

Summary: This case study highlights the challenging and necessary course of a 14-week course of antibiotics in a 12-day-old male neonate with Elizabethkingia anophelis septicemia and meningitis. Despite treatment, the patient developed complications such as ventriculitis, hydrocephalus, and required a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Subsequent follow-up at 5 months showed developmental delay in the patient.

MBLs, Rather Than Efflux Pumps, Led to Carbapenem Resistance in Fosfomycin and Aztreonam/Avibactam Resistant Elizabethkingia anophelis

Summary: This study identified coronary artery disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, recent surgery, anemia, and systemic steroid use as independent risk factors for acquiring E. anophelis infections. Additionally, anemia was the only independent risk factor associated with in-hospital mortality in these patients. The study also revealed high susceptibility of E. anophelis isolates to minocycline and piperacillin/tazobactam, but resistance to other antibiotics. Carbapenem resistance in E. anophelis is mainly due to metallo-P-lactamases, BlaB and GOB, rather than efflux pumps.
