Low-head pumped hydro storage: A review on civil structure designs, legal and environmental aspects to make its realization feasible in seawater

R. Ansorena Ruiz et al.

Summary: The study reviews the components and feasibility of low-head seawater pumped hydro storage projects, highlighting the challenges and potential solutions in constructing such systems in shallow seas or integrated into coastal defenses. The research draws from proposed, planned, and constructed projects worldwide and provides insights into the economic and environmental considerations of these projects, particularly in the North Sea region.

Low-head pumped hydro storage: A review of applicable technologies for design, grid integration, control and modelling

J. P. Hoffstaedt et al.

Summary: To counteract the destabilizing effects of intermittent renewable energy sources on electrical grids, energy storage systems, specifically pumped hydro storage, are essential. This review provides a multidisciplinary insight into low-head (2-30m) pumped hydro storage, including its design, grid integration, control, and modeling. The review discusses the historical development of pumped hydro storage, identifies trends for further innovation, and explores the challenges and potential solutions for low-head application. It concludes that axial flow pump-turbines with variable speed drives and coupled axial flux permanent magnet synchronous motor-generators are the most suitable technologies for high-flow low-head scenarios. Grid-forming control and bulk energy storage for synthetic inertia and other ancillary services are also required for grid stability.

Nonlinear Model Predictive Control of a Variable-Speed Pumped-Storage Power Plant

Jan-Frederik Mennemann et al.

Summary: This article introduces a nonlinear model predictive control strategy for pumped-storage power plants, which achieves fast dynamic adjustment while meeting system constraints, and proposes measures to ensure real-time capability. Through simulation studies, the feasibility and robustness of the control strategy in tracking fast-changing grid powers and parameter uncertainties are demonstrated.

Enhanced contribution of photovoltaic power systems to frequency control in future power systems

Julia Seidel et al.

Summary: In contemporary grid infrastructure, the role of wind farms and photovoltaic systems in frequency control is becoming increasingly important due to the growth of distributed energy resources. While PV inverters can react faster to frequency deviations than conventional power plants, current market and regulatory conditions do not support their participation.

Summary: The rise of renewable energy production in the pan-European grid has increased the demand for flexible energy storage, leading to the implementation of pumped hydropower storage in flat topographies by the ALPHEUS project to enhance grid stability. The use of a contra-rotating axial Reversible Pump-Turbine and two separate Axial-Flux Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors ensures optimal efficiency and flexibility in low head applications.

A review of pumped hydro energy storage

Andrew Blakers et al.

Summary: The need for electricity storage is increasing due to the rise of solar and wind generation, with pumped hydro storage being the dominant source. Batteries are becoming competitive for short-term storage, but pumped hydro remains the cheaper option for large-scale energy storage.
