Quantifying the Contribution of Dynamic Reactive Power Compensators on System Strength at LCC-HVdc Converter Terminals

Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces improved indices, specifically the AISCR, to assess the impact of reactive power compensators on HVdc converter performance, since the traditional ESCR index cannot be directly applied when power-electronics based converters are used for reactive power support. The AISCR index is evaluated by comparing a system with the compensator to one without, but with equivalent performance. Additionally, the paper addresses the use of two types of compensators - the Synchronous Compensator and the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) - and suggests modifications to the AISCR index for different HVdc phenomena.

Rethinking Current Controller Design for PLL-Synchronized VSCs in Weak Grids

Hong Gong et al.

Summary: This article revisits the design of the current controller for grid-connected voltage-source converters (VSCs), considering the dynamic impacts of the phase-locked loop (PLL), weak grids, and voltage feedforward (VFF) control. Based on theoretical analyses, a guideline for redesigning the current controller of PLL-synchronized VSCs is developed, enabling a codesign of the current controller and VFF controller. Simulation and experimental results validate the validity of the theoretical analyses.

Passivity-Based Analysis and Performance Enhancement of a Vector Controlled VSC Connected to a Weak AC Grid

Adedotun J. Agbemuko et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an intuitive modification of VSC control based on physical considerations and dynamics of existing control, significantly improving active power capability by eliminating the impacts of influential variables. The basic structure of the VSC is maintained while effectively reshaping its output impedance. The proposed modification is validated through nonlinear time-domain simulations, demonstrating the simplicity and intuitiveness of the modified structure.
