Machine learning in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy as a novel approach towards experimental parameter optimization

David Prochazka et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop an artificial neural network (ANN) that can predict the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of selected spectral lines based on specific experimental parameters and sample properties. The ANN was trained using a large number of measurements from different materials and optimized for performance. It was found that at least 20 combinations of experimental parameters are necessary for one matrix to obtain reasonable performance of the ANN. However, only ten combinations are needed when a new matrix is added. The prediction accuracy is poor for spectral lines not included in the training data. The ANN was used to predict the SNR of selected spectral lines and discuss the values in relation to sample properties.

A brief review of new data analysis methods of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy: machine learning

Dianxin Zhang et al.

Summary: Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a technology used for content and composition analysis based on the atomic excitation and emission spectrum of materials. It has advantages such as fast detection speed, no environmental limitation, and no sample pretreatment. The low accuracy of LIBS is a major problem, and machine learning algorithms have significantly improved its accuracy compared to traditional analysis methods. Researchers have begun to focus on the application of machine learning algorithms in LIBS data analysis.

Laser-induced fluorescence of filament-produced plasmas

Elizabeth J. Kautz et al.

Summary: In this study, laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) was utilized to enhance emission signals from plasma generated by ultrafast laser filaments on an Al 6061 alloy target. This approach effectively reduced self-reversal features and improved detection sensitivity for standoff and remote element and isotope detection. The findings highlight the potential of LIF for boosting signal-to-noise ratio in filament-induced breakdown spectroscopy applications.

Summary: The study focused on the emission of deuterium (2 H alpha) in plasmas generated from femtosecond laser ablation of a Zircaloy-4 target with varying focusing lens positions. Changes in emission intensity, plume morphology, and crater dimensions were observed. The results showed that adjusting the laser focal point position can significantly impact the emission intensity and plasma characteristics.
