Silicon 3D Microdosimeters for Advanced Quality Assurance in Particle Therapy

Linh T. Tran et al.

Summary: The Centre for Medical Radiation Physics introduced the concept of Silicon On Insulator (SOI) microdosimeters with 3-Dimensional (3D) cylindrical sensitive volumes (SVs) mimicking the dimensions of cells in an array. Several designs of high-definition 3D SVs fabricated using 3D MEMS technology were implemented. The SVs were used to evaluate the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of heavy ions and protons delivered by different particle therapy centers.

Application of an SOI Microdosimeter for Monitoring of Neutrons in Various Mixed Radiation Field Environments

V. A. Pan et al.

Summary: In this study, the application of silicon on insulator (SOI) microdosimeters for neutron monitoring in various mixed radiation field environments was investigated. It was demonstrated that a 10-mu m SOI microdosimeter with (B4C)-B-10 converter is suitable for detection of thermal neutrons with excellent discrimination of gamma, fast and thermal neutron components. Additionally, a new 2 mu m Mushroom-planar microdosimeter was fabricated to improve the detection of neutrons in mixed radiation fields.

Microdosimetric investigation for multi-ion therapy by means of silicon on insulator (SOI) microdosimeter

Dousatsu Sakata et al.

Summary: This study extended previous work by using the SOI microdosimeter to predict cell survival rate in multi-ion therapy, and established a quality assurance protocol. The results showed good agreement between the predicted cell survival rate and the results from an in-house treatment planning system, indicating the potential benefit of the SOI microdosimeter as a QA system in multi-ion radiotherapy.

Modelling of protons spectra encountered in space using medical accelerator and its microdosimetric characterization

S. Peracchi et al.

Summary: Space radiation environments are mainly composed of protons from Galactic Cosmic Rays, Solar Particle Events, and the Van Allen Belts. These radiations have diverse effects on astronauts and electronics on spacecraft. By using a proton therapy accelerator, a proton radiation field in space has been modelled in the energy range from 70 to 230 MeV, with the resulting field characterized using a 3D sensitive volume microdosimeter.

Radiation Shielding Evaluation of Spacecraft Walls Against Heavy Ions Using Microdosimetry

Stefania Peracchi et al.

Summary: Despite their low contribution to the total fluence in space radiation, heavy ions have a significant radiobiological effect on the human body. This study investigated the interaction of galactic cosmic rays with the shielding wall of the ISS Columbus module, presenting quality factors and normalized dose equivalents for C, Ne, and Si ions behind different spacecraft wall configurations and materials.

Characterization of a novel large area microdosimeter system for low dose rate radiation environments

Vladimir A. Pan et al.

Summary: The feasibility of the newly developed microdosimetry system Octobox for application in low dose rate, mixed radiation environments was assessed through a characterization study at HIMAC in Japan and ANSTO in Australia. The device demonstrated efficient data collection, accurate measurement of microdosimetric quantities, and good agreement with Geant4 simulations for various ion fields. The findings suggest Octobox could be used effectively in mixed, low dose rate radiation environments for radiation protection in space, aviation, and underground mines.
