This work presents the application of polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) plastic polymer as a material for detecting and analyzing ionizing radiation particles. The study focuses on using PEN detectors to discriminate different types of ionizing radiation particles. Calibrations were carried out using sealed alpha, gamma, and beta sources to find the optimal parameters for particle discrimination. The quality of discrimination was evaluated using the figure of merit (FOM) factor, which considers the normal distribution of pulses caused by ionizing radiation particles.
Polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) plastic polymer is a promising material for the detection of ionizing radiation particles and analysis of their properties. The application of PEN detectors for the detection and discrimination of different kinds of ionizing radiation particles is presented in this work. The detectors made of molded PEN were used to discriminate neutrons and gamma particles from the PuBe isotopic source. Sealed alpha, gamma, and beta sources were used to calibrate the equipment and find optimal parameters for particle discrimination. For these purposes, the registration of prompt and delayed fluorescence was carried out by using a Hamamatsu photomultiplier. To determine the quality of the discrimination, the figure of merit (FOM) factor was used, which is determined by considering the normal distribution of pulses caused by ionizing radiation particles.
