Summary: This article proposes an alternative method for measuring the impedance of the electrical network in the power line communication (PLC) frequency range. The method utilizes the preamble of a generic PLC transmission and performs impedance calculation using FFT analysis. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system accurately measures the PLC impedance on CENELEC A, B, and FCC frequency ranges.

Summary: While power lines were not initially designed for communication purposes, they have been used for ancillary communication services for many years. However, the presence of loads and switchgear can interfere with reliable communication. This has resulted in power line communication usually being used for non-critical control tasks. Nonetheless, there is potential to increase the reliability of PLC for low data rate control applications within regulatory rules, offering new and cost-effective opportunities for demand-side management of loads in buildings or facilities.

Summary: Many demand-response schemes fail due to inconvenience or unnecessary costs for consumers. This paper presents a self-organizing demand response scheme that utilizes power lines as a natural and free communication infrastructure, effectively reducing peak demand without inconveniencing users.

Summary: Line impedance estimation is crucial for power-line communication, power quality estimation, and grid-connected power electronics applications. This work introduces a phase-controlled switch to provide information about the line, extending previous switching-based approaches. By using a common electrical load and demonstrating nonparametric line impedance estimation, good estimation performance is achieved from dc up to 200 kHz.
