Electro-Mechanical Coupling in Impedance-Based Tissue Differentiation Under Compression

Carina Veil et al.

Summary: Impedance spectroscopy is a useful diagnostic tool in oncology for tissue differentiation. However, external influences such as contact force and mechanical stress can affect the electrical measurements, making tissue discrimination difficult. This study establishes a multiphysical model for electro-mechanical coupling during impedance spectroscopy and explains the increase in resistivity through fluid exodus from compressed tissue. Experimental results confirm that this method can identify electrical parameter differences between healthy and malignant tissue.
