Declining size-at-harvest in Norwegian salmon aquaculture: Lice, disease, and the role of stunboats

LukeT. Barrett et al.

Summary: Sea cages used for fish farming face the threat of infection accumulation. Farmed Atlantic salmon in Norway suffer from outbreaks of salmon lice and other infections, and while delousing treatments are required by law, they often lead to a reduction in size-at-harvest. Smaller fish are usually harvested during treatment months. There is evidence that post-treatment mortality is higher, unless a harvest also occurs during the treatment month. Stunboats are used for harvesting small fish and sometimes visit during treatment periods without any harvest.

Salmon lice-induced mortality of Atlantic salmon during post-smolt migration in Norway

Ingrid A. Johnsen et al.

Summary: This study focused on the environmental challenges of salmonid aquaculture, estimating the impact of salmon lice on wild salmon mortality in Norwegian waters using models and data analysis. Results showed that aquaculture-produced salmon lice led to varying mortality rates of wild salmon post-smolts in different rivers.

Evolution of salmon lice in response to management strategies: a review

Andrew Coates et al.

Summary: Salmon lice have developed resistance to chemical therapeutants, leading to a shift towards non-chemical control methods in aquaculture. However, lice may also adapt to these new methods. Research indicates phenotypic variation in louse populations, which could affect non-chemical control strategies.

Parasite management in aquaculture exerts selection on salmon louse behaviour

Andrew Coates et al.

Summary: The study in Atlantic salmon aquaculture showed that different behavioral traits in copepodids affect the dispersion of lice and the infestation pressure on barriers, suggesting strong directional selection on copepodid swimming behavior by barriers. The findings emphasize the potential for barriers to slow louse adaptation by limiting access during periods of strong selection, with variations in seasonal and geographic strength of selection.

The development of a sustainability assessment indicator and its response to management changes as derived from salmon lice dispersal modelling

Anne D. Sandvik et al.

Summary: In Norway, the government uses salmon lice-induced mortality in wild salmonid populations as a measure of environmental sustainability in aquaculture. By developing an index based on evidence-based proxies, including infestation pressure from a bio-hydrodynamic model, they aim to assess the sustainability of aquaculture. The study highlights the importance of reducing lice levels in farms to achieve environmental sustainability in the Norwegian aquaculture industry.

Salmon lice should be managed before they attach to salmon: Exploring epidemiological factors affecting Lepeophtheirus salmonis abundance on salmon farms

Jaewoon Jeong et al.

Summary: Efforts have been made to develop effective lice control strategies for tackling the challenges posed by ectoparasite Lepeophtheirus salmonis on salmon farms. Understanding the key parameters affecting L. salmonis population dynamics is crucial for informed management decisions and prevention strategies. The study suggests that prevention of infestation before lice attach to fish is more effective than treating already infested salmon.

Losing the 'arms race': multiresistant salmon lice are dispersed throughout the North Atlantic Ocean

Helene Borretzen Fjortoft et al.

Summary: As time goes by, some pests have developed resistance to multiple pesticides, challenging our ability to control them effectively. This is particularly evident in salmonid aquaculture, where the ectoparasitic salmon louse has developed resistance to most available delousing compounds.

Farmed salmonids drive the abundance, ecology and evolution of parasitic salmon lice in Norway

T. Dempster et al.

Summary: Sea cage fish farming poses risks for disease transmission between farmed and wild hosts, with salmon louse infestations causing production losses and affecting wild fish populations. The expansion of the industry has led to farmed salmonids becoming increasingly dominant in Norwegian coastal waters, significantly impacting the abundance of salmon lice.
