Conceptual uncertainties in groundwater and porewater fluxes estimated by radon and radium mass balances

Valenti Rodellas et al.

Summary: This study assesses uncertainties related to radium and radon inputs from groundwater and porewater fluxes into La Palme Lagoon, France. Using a model ensemble approach and sensitivity tests, the study demonstrates that conceptual uncertainties are a major source of uncertainty in estimating groundwater or porewater fluxes. Comparing independent methods helps to constrain the magnitude of porewater fluxes.

Using geochemistry to identify and quantify the sources, distribution, and fluxes of baseflow to an intermittent river impacted by climate change: The upper Wimmera River, southeast Australia

Zibo Zhou et al.

Summary: This study differentiated between low-salinity near-river waters and regional groundwater input in an intermittent river in southeast Australia using major ion geochemistry, Rn-222, and H-3. Results showed higher baseflow fluxes in the upper and middle reaches, while the lower reaches received less baseflow. The observation suggests that near-river water stores are more important than regional groundwater in sustaining streamflow during dry periods.

A Framework for Untangling Transient Groundwater Mixing and Travel Times

Andrea L. Popp et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new approach to understand the relationship between groundwater mixing ratios and travel times using in-situ noble gas analyses. The results from a groundwater pumping test conducted in Switzerland demonstrate the importance of interpreting age dating tracers and the influence of different water sources on estimated travel times.

Tracing Bank Storage and Hyporheic Exchange Dynamics Using 222Rn: Virtual and Field Tests and Comparison With Other Tracers

Fu Liao et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Radon-222 is more effective in tracing dynamic exchanges between rivers and groundwater compared to temperature and total dissolved solids. It also shows that variables such as aquifer hydraulic conductivity, dispersivity, river water Rn-222 concentration, and bank topography significantly affect the prominence and traceability of the Rn-222 signal. Additionally, the study suggests that reactive transport models can be used to estimate and interpret the transport and residence time of exchanged water in dynamic settings, but it requires accurate characterization of fluctuations in river water Rn-222.
