Data-driven soft computing modeling of groundwater quality parameters in southeast Nigeria: comparing the performances of different algorithms

Johnbosco C. Egbueri et al.

Summary: In this study, various soft computing techniques were integrated and compared for modeling and predicting groundwater quality parameters in the Ojoto area of SE Nigeria. The results showed that both anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic activities influenced water quality parameters, and a percentage of groundwater samples were found to be unsuitable for drinking. Heavy metals such as Pb, Ni, and Zn were found to have the most significant impact on the water quality indices. Multiple linear regression and artificial neural network algorithms showed different performances in simulating and predicting the parameters.

Deciphering complex groundwater age distributions and recharge processes in a tropical and fractured volcanic multi-aquifer system

Ricardo Sanchez-Murillo et al.

Summary: This study used a multi-tracer approach to assess groundwater recharge mechanisms and age distributions in highly fractured volcanic aquifers in central Costa Rica. The results showed that groundwater in the unconfined aquifer system is relatively young, while water in deeper aquifer units is older. The recharge estimate accounted for 20.1% of the total annual rainfall.

Hierarchical clustering and compositional data analysis for interpreting groundwater hydrogeochemistry: The application to Campi Flegrei volcanic aquifer (south Italy)

Pooria Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: This study conducted comprehensive hydrogeochemical studies on the Campi Flegrei volcanic aquifer, and categorized groundwater samples based on dominant anion species. The results showed different characteristics and origins of the groundwater groups, as well as their spatial distribution.

Assessment of PTEs in water resources by integrating HHRISK code, water quality indices, multivariate statistics, and ANNs

Johnson C. Agbasi et al.

Summary: The study revealed that 60% of water samples in Umunya, Nigeria were suitable for human consumption while 40% were not. Non-carcinogenic health risk scores indicated that 60% of the samples posed low to medium risks, while 40% posed high risks. Conversely, 6.67% of samples posed low carcinogenic risks, while 93.33% posed high risks, with children being more vulnerable to health risks than adults. Linear regression analysis showed strong agreement between index models and health risks, and artificial neural networks accurately predicted water quality indices.

Origin and geochemical evolution of groundwater in the Abaya Chamo basin of the Main Ethiopian Rift: application of multi-tracer approaches

Muhammed Haji et al.

Summary: The fractured volcanic aquifer in the Abaya Chamo basin in the southern Ethiopian Rift undergoes a geochemical evolution of groundwater from Ca-Mg-HCO3 to Na-HCO3, controlled by silicate hydrolysis and Ca/Na ion exchange. The groundwater is predominantly of meteoric origin, with cold groundwater absorbing soil CO2 and thermal groundwater influxing magmatic CO2 through deep-seated faults. Groundwater flow dynamics differ between the western and northern parts of Lake Abaya area, affecting water types and quality.

Condensation water in heritage touristic caves: Isotopic and hydrochemical data and a new approach for its quantification through image analysis

Cristina Linan et al.

Summary: Condensation water is a significant factor in the conservation of heritage caves, as it can dissolve rock substrate or cover it with mineral components. Visitors in show caves modify the microclimate, contributing to negative processes that affect conservation. Studies on the chemical composition of this type of water are limited.

Quadratic Discriminant Analysis Based Ensemble Machine Learning Models for Groundwater Potential Modeling and Mapping

Duong Hai Ha et al.

Summary: This study developed three new GIS-based Machine Learning ensemble models for groundwater potential mapping in Dak Nong Province, Vietnam, with the ABQDA model outperforming the others in producing accurate maps. These models can aid policymakers and water resources managers in optimal exploitation of vital groundwater resources.
