Changes in the incidence and overall survival of patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms between 2002 and 2016 in the United States

Srdan Verstovsek et al.

Summary: This study analyzed trends in incidence and survival of myeloproliferative neoplasms in US adults, showing a rising incidence of essential thrombocythemia without concurrent improvements in survival, highlighting the need for more effective therapies. Improved survival over time was observed for polycythemia vera and primary myelofibrosis.

Thrombotic events and mortality risk in patients with newly diagnosed polycythemia vera or essential thrombocythemia

Naveen Pemmaraju et al.

Summary: This study conducted a retrospective analysis of Medicare patients and found that patients with polycythemia vera (PV) and essential thrombocythemia (ET) have increased thrombotic risk. Thrombotic events were associated with an increased mortality risk and shorter median survival time. These findings highlight the importance of thrombosis risk mitigation in the management of PV and ET.

Thrombosis and hemorrhage in myeloproliferative neoplasms: The platelet perspective

Yiming Feng et al.

Summary: Classical myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) is a clonal disease characterized by abnormal expansion of hematopoietic stem cells. MPN patients are more susceptible to thrombotic events, but antiplatelet therapies may cause bleeding. Platelets play a critical role in the pathogenesis of MPN and optimizing antithrombotic treatment strategies by adjusting the administration of antiplatelet drugs may achieve simultaneous control of thrombosis and bleeding.

Validation of thrombotic risk factors in 1381 patients with essential thrombocythaemia: A multicentre retrospective real-life study

Ruth Stuckey et al.

Summary: This study validated the r-IPSET-t score as a better predictor for thrombosis than the ELN-recommended IPSET-t score in patients with essential thrombocythaemia. Cytoreduction was identified as a thrombotic risk factor in younger patients, and post-diagnosis anti-aggregation therapy was protective against thrombosis but increased the risk of major bleeding. Re-classification of patients resulted in some individuals being moved to lower-risk categories. Despite recommendations against aspirin use for very-low-risk patients, a significant percentage still received this treatment.

Hemorrhage in Essential Thrombocythemia or Polycythemia Vera: Epidemiology, Location, Risk Factors, and Lessons Learned from the Literature

Christophe Nicol et al.

Summary: Hemorrhage is a common complication in essential thrombocythemia (ET) and polycythemia vera (PV), but there is a lack of evidence-based data on its management and prevention. This review analyzed data from the past 15 years regarding bleeding epidemiology, classification, location, and risk factors, highlighting the need for further research on bleeding risk factors in these diseases.
