Metallaphotoredox: The Merger of Photoredox and Transition Metal Catalysis

Amy Y. Chan et al.

Summary: The merger of photoredox catalysis with transition metal catalysis, known as metallaphotoredox catalysis, has become an important part of synthetic methodology. It combines the bond formation capability of transition metal catalysis with the utility of photoinduced electron and energy transfer processes. Photocatalytic substrate activation allows the involvement of simple starting materials in metal-mediated bond-forming processes, while electron or energy transfer with organometallic intermediates provides a complementary activation mode to traditional catalytic platforms.

Safe, Scalable, Inexpensive, and Mild Nickel-Catalyzed Migita-Like C-S Cross-Couplings in Recyclable Water

Tzu-Yu Yu et al.

Summary: A new method of C-S coupling based on nickel catalysis in water with micellar catalysis has been reported, showing high isolated yields under mild conditions. It offers potential for scalability and low residual metal content, making it applicable to pharmaceutical synthesis targets. The associated low E Factor also suggests it may be a more attractive option compared to current methods using unsustainable Pd catalyst loadings.

Using the Thiyl Radical for Aliphatic Hydrogen-Atom Transfer: Thiolation of Unactivated C-H Bonds

Liubov Panferova et al.

Summary: The metal- and catalyst-free thiyl-radical-mediated activation of alkanes involves thiolation of C-H bonds using tetrafluoropyridinyl disulfide under irradiation with 400 nm LEDs. The key C-H activation step is believed to proceed through hydrogen-atom abstraction by a fluorinated thiyl radical, allowing various types of C-H bonds to participate in the thiolation reaction. The resulting sulfides have great potential as photoredox-active radical precursors in reactions with alkenes and heteroarenes.

Direct Allylic C(sp3)-H and Vinylic C(sp2)-H Thiolation with Hydrogen Evolution by Quantum Dots and Visible Light

Cheng Huang et al.

Summary: An efficient, atom- and step-economic method for direct allylic C(sp(3))-H thiolation under visible light irradiation is developed in this study, which does not require external oxidants and radical initiators, with hydrogen produced as a byproduct. Radical trapping experiments showed the involvement of allylic radical and thiyl radical in C-S bond formation on the surface of photocatalyst quantum dots.

Ni-Catalyzed Aryl Sulfide Synthesis through an Aryl Exchange Reaction

Ryota Isshiki et al.

Summary: A Ni-catalyzed aryl sulfide synthesis method was developed using 2-pyridyl sulfide as the sulfide donor, eliminating the need for odorous and toxic thiols. The Ni/dcypt catalyst played a crucial role in the aryl exchange reaction between 2-pyridyl sulfides and aryl electrophiles, with mechanistic studies showing its ability to undergo oxidative additions and ligand exchanges simultaneously.

Pyrogallol[4]arene Coordination Nanocapsule Micelle as Bioinspired Water Reduction Catalyst

Chunqing Ji et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal synthesis of a novel cobalt-seamed C-ethylpyrogallol[4]arene-based metalorganic nanocapsule (Co(24)PgC(2) MONC) can easily be converted into micelles in water using Tween-20, leading to a significant increase in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficiency. The addition of Tween-20 not only homogenizes the catalyst and provides more active sites, but also inhibits energy transfer between the photosensitizer and nanocapsules.
