China's Infrastructure Investment to the Belt and Road: The Case of the China-Indochina Peninsula Economic Corridor

Yuwen Dai

Summary: The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) was officially launched by the Chinese government in 2013, aiming at deepening regional economic cooperation and investing in infrastructure. China's outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) has increased significantly, making China a global leader in transportation infrastructure construction. Empirical studies show that Chinese OFDI in BRI countries is higher than non-BRI countries, highlighting the importance of factors such as institutional relationships and political stability in infrastructure projects.

Global 10-m impervious surface area mapping: A big earth data based extraction and updating approach

Zhongchang Sun et al.

Summary: This study developed a method to accurately extract global impervious surface area using Sentinel satellite data and ancillary datasets, and generated impervious surface area maps for 2015 and 2018. The study provided a detailed distribution of impervious surfaces globally and showed quantitative changes in urbanization. The results demonstrated an increase in global impervious surfaces from 2015 to 2018, with China, the USA, and Russia contributing the most. Additionally, significant growth was observed in South America and Africa.

Surface urban heat islands in Italian metropolitan cities: Tree cover and impervious surface influences

Marco Morabito et al.

Summary: This study investigated the summer daytime surface urban heat island phenomenon in 10 Italian peninsular metropolitan cities, finding that impervious and tree cover surfaces play a key role. The most intense heat island effects were observed in inland cities, with a mitigating effect of the sea on coastal cities.

Impervious surface growth and its inter-relationship with vegetation cover and land surface temperature in peri-urban areas of Delhi

Dipanwita Dutta et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatio-temporal changes in impervious surface in and around Delhi National Capital Territory using bi-temporal Landsat images from 2003 and 2014. The research highlights the significant growth of impervious land, especially in peri-urban centers surrounding Delhi, and its correlation with vegetation surface fraction, land surface temperature, and urban expansion. The study reveals a strong negative correlation between impervious surface fraction and urban expansion index, indicating the potential for urban expansion in less developed areas with abundant pervious surface.

Land use mapping using Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 time series in a heterogeneous landscape in Niger, Sahel

Dario Schulz et al.

Summary: Land use maps are important planning tools for decision makers, especially in challenging sectors like food security and urban planning in regions like the Sahel. Remote sensing imageries are essential for producing such maps, but heterogeneous landscapes in the Sahel can make classification difficult. This study utilized Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 archives to create a high resolution land use map for Niamey, Niger and surrounding areas, showcasing the potential of combining multi-modal imageries and multiple classifiers for accurate mapping. The classifier ensemble map showed superior accuracy compared to existing global land cover products, highlighting the benefits of using different classifiers for mapping a heterogenous environment.

Optimization of Modelling Population Density Estimation Based on Impervious Surfaces

Jinyu Zang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method for estimating population density based on remote sensing data, incorporating impervious surface (IS), night light (NTL), and point of interest (POI) data. The multi-variable model shows high potential for predicting population density, and downscaling the predicted density achieves a more refined distribution on a pixel level.

Congmin Li et al.

Summary: The study compared the performance of different spectral indices and binary methods in extracting impervious surface area from multi-seasonal Sentinel-2 images, with PISI combined with the ISODATA classification method achieving the highest accuracy. PISI was found to be relatively more stable in seasonal sensitivity compared to other methods.
