An assessment of data sources, data quality and changes in national forest monitoring capacities in the Global Forest Resources Assessment 2005-2020

Karimon Nesha et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the use and quality of forest monitoring data sources for national reporting to the FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) in 236 countries and territories, finding improvements in global capacities for monitoring forest area through remote sensing and national forest inventory. The study also highlights greater capacity improvements in the tropics in the period assessed.

Mapping Amazon Forest Productivity by Fusing GEDI Lidar Waveforms with an Individual-Based Forest Model

Luise Bauer et al.

Summary: This study used data from NASA's GEDI mission to determine the total gross primary productivity of the Amazon rainforest at 11.4 Pg C a(-1) and found a correlation between forest productivity and canopy height complexity. Additionally, the net ecosystem exchange of the Amazon rainforest was determined to be -0.1 Pg C a(-1).

Terrestrial ecological restoration in China: identifying advances and gaps

Wenhui Cui et al.

Summary: China has made significant progress in ecological restoration, with a shift in research focus from farmland ecosystems to forest ecosystems over time. Forests were the most commonly studied ecosystem type, with less attention given to wetlands and riparian systems. The study highlights the need for more effective implementation of ecological restoration projects, particularly in wetlands and riparian systems, as well as further research on the tradeoff between restorative activities, water resources, and carbon sink.

SMOS L-VOD Retrieved by Level 2 Algorithm and its Correlation With GEDI LIDAR Products

Cristina Vittucci et al.

Summary: This article compares L-band vegetation optical depth (L-VOD) retrieved by SMOS satellite with vegetation parameters obtained by GEDI Lidar instrument in four continents, showing higher correlations in tropical vegetation-covered continents and seasonal effects in others. The differences between L-VODs obtained by linear regression and SMOS data are generally small.
