Estimating actual evapotranspiration at field-to-continent scales by calibrating the CMRSET algorithm with MODIS, VIIRS, Landsat and Sentinel-2 data

Juan P. Guerschman et al.

Summary: In this study, we calibrated and applied the CMRSET model to estimate actual evapotranspiration (ETa) at a continental scale in Australia using a combination of optical remote sensing and meteorological data. The calibrated model showed good performance in estimating ETa at flux towers and compared favorably to other global ETa products. CMRSET provides a straightforward and efficient method for estimating ETa at various spatial and temporal scales.

A Review of Earth Observation-Based Drought Studies in Southeast Asia

Tuyen Ha et al.

Summary: Drought is a recurring climatic hazard that poses devastating threats to humans, the economy, and the environment. Satellite observations play a key role in providing timely and accurate information for early warning drought management. Studies on drought in Southeast Asia have increased, with a focus on Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Vegetation indices from optical remote sensing sensors are commonly used for drought monitoring. Challenges remain in large-area and long time-series drought measurements, combined drought approach, and multi-sensor remote sensing integration.

A new drought monitoring approach: Vector Projection Analysis (VPA)

Bokyung Son et al.

Summary: A new drought monitoring approach using VPA and VPID was developed, which considers multiple drought indicators and can be adopted for different types of drought based on user selection. The evaluation of VPID showed good agreement with surface-based drought indices across the CONUS and East Asia. The proposed approach can be applied to any region with different combinations of surface-based drought indices and satellite-derived drought factors.

Using SMAP Level-4 soil moisture to constrain MOD16 evapotranspiration over the contiguous USA

Colin Brust et al.

Summary: Evapotranspiration (ET) is a crucial hydrological variable that connects the water, carbon, and energy cycles of the Earth. Remote sensing-based models are often used to quantify ET at large scales, but few models incorporate soil moisture, leading to decreased accuracy. By integrating soil moisture estimates from NASA's SMAP mission into the MOD16 ET algorithm framework, along with vegetation observations and regional meteorology data, model performance can be significantly improved, especially in arid climates.

Time-Series Clustering Based on the Characterization of Segment Typologies

David Guijo-Rubio et al.

Summary: The proposed novel technique of time-series clustering involves two clustering stages that consider the similarity of different subsequences of each time series and use mapping to compare time-series objects. Results show promising performance, especially on larger datasets, when compared to three state-of-the-art methods on 84 datasets from the UCR Time Series Classification Archive.

Summary: This study develops a probabilistic and multivariable flash drought identification method (PMFDI) to accurately identify flash droughts, considering the interaction effects of different driving factors. The PMFDI can effectively identify actual flash droughts and capture the comprehensive impact of multiple hydrometeorological variables on flash drought occurrence.

Regional drought risk assessment in the Central Highlands and the South of Vietnam

Tien Le et al.

Summary: This study contributes to a proof-of-concept comprehensive drought risk assessment for Vietnam by incorporating drought exposure and vulnerability based on specific socio-economic conditions of the regions, and using satellite data for drought hazard assessment. The highest at-risk provinces were identified in the Mekong River Delta, while the South East regions were less impacted by drought. The proposed approach has the potential to improve drought preparedness and resilience of communities at-risk.
