Surface eruptive dynamics of 2018 small phreatic eruption of Iwo-Yama volcano, Japan: Constraints from seismo-acoustic observation and mud suspension rheology

Dan Muramatsu et al.

Summary: The 2018 small phreatic eruption at Iwo-yama volcano in Japan was studied using infrasonic, seismic, and visual observations. The study revealed that the transition of infrasonic pulses may be caused by changes in bubble bursting styles due to increased water fraction in the mud suspension. The widening of the vent was attributed to the addition of water and the subsequent weakening of soil strength.

Aging in magma rheology

Aika K. Kurokawa et al.

Summary: Aging has an impact on the rheological behavior of various materials, including magma and lava. This study on basaltic andesite lava from a volcanic eruption in 1986 demonstrates that aging increases the yield stress of magma and lava, and shear stress can break down aggregated structures.

Fracturing and healing of basaltic magmas during explosive volcanic eruptions

J. Taddeucci et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fragmentation mechanism of basaltic magmas during explosive eruptions through field sampling and laboratory experiments. The results show that brittle fracturing and viscous healing impact gas mobility, stress distribution, and bubble and crystal size distributions in magma.

Excitation of airwaves by bubble bursting in suspensions : regime transitions and implications for basaltic volcanic eruptions

Kana Hashimoto et al.

Summary: Basaltic magma becomes more viscous and solid-like as crystal content increases, affecting bubble bursting and airwave excitation. Laboratory experiments show that bubbles in suspensions with different particle fraction and volume can excite airwaves with various frequency bands. The bursting behavior and waveforms also differ depending on suspension properties, such as the presence of Helmholtz resonance.
