Type-Dependent Impact of Aerosols on Precipitation Associated With Deep Convective Cloud Over East Asia

Xinlei Han et al.

Summary: The impact of aerosols on precipitation is a significant uncertainty in climate simulation and projection. Observational evidence suggests that dust and polluted continental aerosols increase heavy rain, while elevated smoke tends to suppress deep convective precipitation. Different aerosol types have varying effects on precipitation over land and ocean.

On the relationship between convective precipitation and aerosol pollution in North China Plain during autumn and winter

Zhisheng Xiao et al.

Summary: There is a positive correlation between aerosol pollution and convective precipitation in North China during autumn and winter. Under polluted conditions, higher aerosol optical depth and higher droplet concentration with smaller size can favor the development of the convective cloud-precipitation system through the aerosol invigoration effect. Additionally, the impact of ambient meteorological conditions on the aerosol-precipitation relationship was also analyzed.

Investigation of ice cloud modeling capabilities for the irregularly shaped Voronoi ice scattering models in climate simulations

Ming Li et al.

Summary: This study simulated the optical and radiative properties of ice clouds using a parameterization scheme of the Voronoi ICS model in a climate model. The results showed that the Voronoi scheme had smaller differences in global average cloud radiative forcing compared to other existing schemes, and it provided the closest match with EBAF products in regions where ice clouds occur frequently.

Measurement report: Long-term changes in black carbon and aerosol optical properties from 2012 to 2020 in Beijing, China

Jiaxing Sun et al.

Summary: Atmospheric aerosols, including equivalent black carbon (eBC) and aerosol optical properties, have experienced significant changes in Beijing, China, due to the implementation of the Clean Air Action Plan. The reduction in eBC and the light extinction coefficient of fine particles indicate improvements in air quality. The increase in single-scattering albedo (SSA) and mass extinction efficiency (MEE) suggests an increasing role of scattering aerosols in radiative forcing. Additionally, the changes in brown carbon (BrC) and its contribution to total BrC highlight the enhanced secondary formation of BrC. These findings have important implications for aerosol-boundary layer interactions and air quality improvement.

Summary: The study reveals that in Northwest China, stratiform precipitation dominates and convective precipitation has storm top heights higher than stratiform precipitation. The characteristics vary in different regions, providing valuable information for further numerical simulations in arid-semiarid regions.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different synoptic weather patterns on precipitation in eastern China, utilizing three-dimensional observations of precipitation. The findings suggest a possible linkage between the three-dimensional features of precipitation and the large-scale Western Pacific Subtropical High circulation.

The Role of Primary Emission and Transboundary Transport in the Air Quality Changes During and After the COVID-19 Lockdown in China

Hao Fan et al.

Summary: In late January 2020, China's strict control measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 led to a significant reduction in socio-economic activity and emissions. During the lockdown, concentrations of major air pollutants (except O-3) decreased significantly, while ozone increased rapidly. After the full-scale reopen in March 2020, air pollutant concentrations bounced back rapidly, highlighting the role of emissions in pollution formation.

Multi-Source Data Based Investigation of Aerosol-Cloud Interaction Over the North China Plain and North of the Yangtze Plain

Yikun Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates aerosol-cloud interactions over the North China Plain and north of the Yangtze Plain, finding that aerosol characteristics, atmospheric conditions, and drizzle all have impacts on cloud effective radius. Results show that the aerosol first indirect effect is negative for most cases when considering all clouds, but positive when only considering clouds without drizzle.

Multiple Metrics Informed Projections of Future Precipitation in China

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: Improving the reliability of precipitation forecasts through the use of discriminating metrics for subsampling has significant implications for predicting how precipitation will respond to future warming, especially in East Asia. Models with statistically significant increasing trends in precipitation and similar regional patterns are classified into top performing group, while models in the bottom performing group show diverse responses with overall small drying or no significant trends in precipitation.

Distinct impacts on precipitation by aerosol radiative effect over three different megacity regions of eastern China

Yue Sun et al.

Summary: Aerosols have varying impacts on the start and peak times of precipitation in different regions, and different types of aerosols (absorbing vs. scattering) have different effects. Meteorological conditions, such as humidity and vertical wind shear, also play a role in modulating the effects of aerosols on precipitation.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of aerosols on convective clouds and finds that aerosol loading can influence the occurrence of convective clouds, while topography and diurnal meteorological variations may affect the strength of aerosol effects. The research also highlights the preferential occurrence of convective clouds under polluted conditions in the morning, which reverses in the afternoon.
