2019 Mw 5.9 Mirpur, Pakistan Earthquake: Insights from Integrating Geodetic, Seismic, and Field Observations

Adnan Barkat et al.

Summary: On September 24, 2019, an earthquake occurred near the Mangla reservoir in northeastern Pakistan, resulting in 39 fatalities and 746 serious injuries. Through various observations and modeling, researchers characterized the source properties of the earthquake and confirmed the rupture of the Main Himalayan Thrust fault. The shallow depth of the earthquake explains the extensive damage and liquefaction caused. The study also found that the increase in reservoir water level before the earthquake may have contributed to the fault rupture, highlighting the importance of proper reservoir management to reduce seismic risk.

Tsunami excitation in the outer wedge of global subduction zones

Qiang Qiu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structural control on tsunami generation during seismic rupture propagation by analyzing high-resolution bathymetry, seismic reflection profiles, and tsunami-earthquake rupture models at global subduction zones. The researchers find that tsunami run-ups correlate with the width of the outer wedge of the frontal accretionary prism, which is made up of active faults. The prevalence of high-angle faults in the outer wedge provides a more efficient mechanism for seafloor uplift and tsunami wave excitation. This research is important for assessing seismic and tsunami hazards at subduction zones, especially in identified seismic gaps.

Seismostratigraphic architecture of the sulaiman fold-thrust belt front (Pakistan): Constraints for resource potential of the cretaceous-paleogene strata in the east gondwana fragment

Natasha Khan et al.

Summary: Interpretation of seismic reflection profiles tied to well controls has allowed for assessing the stratigraphic and structural style of the Sulaiman Fold-Thrust Belt (SFTB), including the Zindapir Anticline and the Sulaiman Foredeep. The study found evidence of shallow marine shelfal deposits in the subsurface of the Sulaiman Foredeep, with prograding systems of the Paleocene-Eocene age and packages of divergent reflections fanning towards the west. This suggests accelerated subsidence likely linked to early stages of the SFTB orogeny during the Indian Plate-Afghan Block collision, forming an initial foreland basin to the east. Further deformation towards the east, as evidenced by Neogene faulted detachment folds in the ZA area, may indicate the influence of the Indian-Afghan collisional tectonics during the Oligocene-Miocene, with significant implications for petroleum exploration.

Fold geometry and folding-a review

Seyed Tohid Nabavi et al.

Summary: The research on folds and folding is based on detailed geometrical analysis, and their relationships with structures such as fractures are significant for understanding stress, strain, kinematics, mechanics, and tectonic processes. The distinction between passive and active folding is important, with passive folding being easier to model and understand compared to active folding. Future research should focus on experimental and numerical modeling of active folds to further enhance our understanding of complex fold geometries observed in rocks.

The stop-start control of seismicity by fault bends along the Main Himalayan Thrust

Sharadha Sathiakumar et al.

Summary: Studies show that a ramp structure in the middle of the seismic zone on the Himalayan megathrust is crucial for explaining the termination of ruptures and the source mechanism of aftershocks. The complexity of fault structures likely plays a role in modulating the seismic cycle, influencing the distribution of rupture sizes and rupture propagation. The presence of a ramp structure in the seismic zone explains the aperiodic and variable nature of ruptures and aftershocks on the Himalayan megathrust.
