Rapid growth of anthropogenic organic nanoparticles greatly alters cloud life cycle in the Amazon rainforest

Rahul A. Zaveri et al.

Summary: This study presents aircraft observations of rapid growth of anthropogenic nanoparticles downwind of an isolated metropolis in the Amazon rainforest. Model analysis suggests that the sustained particle growth to cloud condensation nuclei sizes is mainly caused by particle-phase diffusion-limited partitioning of semivolatile oxidation products of biogenic hydrocarbons. Cloud-resolving numerical simulations show that the increased cloud condensation nuclei concentrations in the urban plume significantly alter cloud formation and precipitation, suggesting an appreciable impact of anthropogenic aerosols on cloud life cycle in previously unpolluted forests of the world.

The striking effect of vertical mixing in the planetary boundary layer on new particle formation in the Yangtze River Delta

Shiyi Lai et al.

Summary: This study combines observations and simulations to explore the importance of vertical mixing in the boundary layer for new particle formation (NPF) and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) in the Yangtze River Delta region. The results show that vertical mixing can transport newly formed particles from higher altitudes to the ground level, affecting the strength and timing of NPF. Additionally, the upward transport of condensable gases at the boundary layer top plays a significant role in the continuous growth of nucleated ultrafine particles.

Occurrence and growth of sub-50 nm aerosol particles in the Amazonian boundary layer

Marco A. Franco et al.

Summary: In the Amazon region, classical new particle formation, which leads to cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) size particles, starts in the upper troposphere instead of the planetary boundary layer. Analysis of data from the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory showed that these growth events are more frequent in the wet season and occur more frequently during the day with higher growth rates. These events may be associated with photochemistry and boundary layer evolution, but there are also events that are not related to deep convection or downdraft transport.

Impact of Urban Pollution on Organic-Mediated New-Particle Formation and Particle Number Concentration in the Amazon Rainforest

Bin Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that urban pollution can increase particle number concentration in the downwind region by 5-25 times, with new particle formation (NPF) mechanisms contributing over 70% of particle number in that region. Among various NPF mechanisms, ternary NPF involving organics and sulfuric acid overwhelmingly dominates.

Sulfuric acid-amine nucleation in urban Beijing

Runlong Cai et al.

Summary: Based on long-term atmospheric measurements in Beijing, it was found that the collision of H2SO4-amine clusters is the dominant mechanism for initiating NPF in urban environments, while high aerosol concentration limits the rate of new particle formation. Additionally, in Beijing, the formation of H2SO4-amine clusters is sometimes restricted by low amine concentrations.
