A Holocene palaeomagnetic secular variation record from Lake Pupuke, New Zealand

Ruth M. Corkill et al.

Summary: The paleomagnetic records of three lake sediment cores in northern New Zealand have been merged to produce a new Holocene geomagnetic secular variation record. These records were correlated using tephra and magnetic susceptibility variations, showing well-defined swings in magnetic direction at different time periods. The regional nature of geomagnetic secular variation is indicated by its agreement with records from Mavora Lakes, 1000 km further south.

ArchKalmag14k: A Kalman-Filter Based Global Geomagnetic Model for the Holocene

M. Schanner et al.

Summary: We propose a global geomagnetic field model, ArchKalmag14k, based on thermoremanent records for the last 14 thousand years. The model is constructed by modifying existing algorithms and sequentializing the inversion process. Uncertainty estimates that vary in space and time are provided. The model shows less variation in large-scale degrees compared to comparable models. Local predictions represent the underlying data and uncertainty is higher for earlier times and regions with sparse data coverage. The model is used to analyze the appearance and evolution of the South Atlantic anomaly and reverse flux patches at the core-mantle boundary, considering uncertainty. While good agreement with earlier models is found for recent times, the model suggests a different evolution of intensity minima prior to 1650 CE. In general, data is insufficient to support global models before 6000 BCE.

Recurrent ancient geomagnetic field anomalies shed light on future evolution of the South Atlantic Anomaly

Andreas Nilsson et al.

Summary: The strength of the Earth's magnetic field has rapidly decreased over the past two centuries, coinciding with the growth of the South Atlantic Anomaly, leading to speculation about a field reversal. Through indirect observations over the past 9,000 years, evidence of recurrent hemispherical field asymmetries related to millennial-scale variations in the dipole moment has been identified, suggesting potential ancient analogs.

Dipole and Nondipole Evolution of the Historical Geomagnetic Field From Instrumental, Archeomagnetic, and Volcanic Data

P. Arneitz et al.

Summary: A new iterative Bayesian spherical harmonic model is developed to better constrain the geomagnetic field evolution over the historical epoch from 1400 to 1900 CE. The model incorporates both direct historical and indirect archeomagnetic or volcanic records, effectively dealing with the variable data uncertainties. The resulting geomagnetic field reconstruction shows a decrease in the axial dipole component between 1500 and 1600 CE, followed by a relatively stable period until 1900 CE, aligning well with historical records and providing insights into the evolution of the South Atlantic Anomaly.

Summary: Reconstructions of the geomagnetic field on long time scales are crucial to understanding the geodynamo processes in the Earth's core. The geomagnetic field exhibits a variety of variations, with different geomagnetic excursions showing distinct features and energy distribution.

Summary: In directional archaeomagnetic studies, anisotropy of thermoremanent magnetization in combustion structures can lead to disturbances in archaeomagnetic directions, which if not properly corrected can significantly affect the obtained ages in archaeomagnetic dating.

Probabilistic approach to geomagnetic field modelling of data with age uncertainties and post-depositional magnetisations

Andreas Nilsson et al.

Summary: A new probabilistic modeling approach has been developed to address the challenges of constructing Holocene geomagnetic field models from sparse and uncertain data, as well as correcting for post-depositional remanent magnetizations and systematic directional errors in sediment records. This approach uses a flexible Student's t-distribution in the likelihood function to avoid excessive smoothing of the model and obtains a final ensemble of models through Hamiltonian Monte Carlo simulation. The modeling approach has been tested and evaluated using synthetic data with realistic noise.
