Paleogeographical reconstruction of the western French Alps foreland during the last glacial maximum using cosmogenic exposure dating

Thibault Roattino et al.

Summary: This study investigates the extent of glaciers in the western French Alps foreland during the last glacial maximum using surface exposure ages. Results suggest that there was a glacier advance and subsequent retreat during the last glacial maximum, and that the glacial dynamics in this region is consistent with the western Italian Alps.

The Ticino-Toce glacier system (Swiss-Italian Alps) in the framework of the Alpine Last Glacial Maximum

Sarah Kamleitner et al.

Summary: We present a new glacier chronology of the Ticino-Toce glacier in the Southern Alps, reconstructing the timing and extent of its Last Glacial Maximum advance with detailed landform relationships and surface exposure dating. The study reveals that the glacier remained relatively stable with only minor oscillations over a period of approximately 5000 years, and the Verbano piedmont lobe was larger than previously thought. Additionally, the research suggests synchronized glacier advances across the Western Alps, except for the southwestern massifs.

Post-LGM glacial and geomorphic evolution of the Dora Baltea valley (western Italian Alps)

Elena Serra et al.

Summary: Paleoglacial reconstructions in the European Alps have mainly focused on specific climatic periods, and few studies have investigated post-LGM glacier fluctuations. In this study, a detailed reconstruction of the post-LGM glacial history of the Dora Baltea catchment was presented. The study quantitatively reproduced the timing and ice-configuration of six LGM to early Holocene paleoglacial stages and revealed the role of catchment topography in controlling paleo equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) of large glacial systems.

Last Glacial Maximum and early deglaciation in the Stura Valley, southwestern European Alps

Adriano Ribolini et al.

Summary: This study investigates the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and the early retreat glacial phases in the Stura Valley of the Maritime Alps through the combination of geomorphologic surveys, glacial modelling, and 10Be exposure ages of boulders on moraines. The research reveals a consistent glacial response in the Maritime Alps to climatic forcing, with minimal variation in the mass balance of glaciers. The study also confirms the synchronicity of LGM recessional standstills or readvances in the Southern Alps.

The role of ice-sheet topography in the Alpine hydro-climate at glacial times

Patricio Velasquez et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sensitivity of the glacial Alpine hydro-climate to northern hemispheric and local ice-sheet changes. The findings suggest that dynamics processes, such as changes in wind speed and direction, contribute to wetter conditions in the southern part of the Alps during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) winter compared to present day. Thermodynamics suggests drier conditions in most of the Alpine region during LGM summer. The study also highlights the importance of northern hemispheric and local ice-sheet topography in regulating the Alpine hydro-climate.

Summary: The study conducted comparative research on the preparation methods of human and animal bones as well as wooden remains from the Tunnug 1 site in the Tuva Republic. The results confirmed a highly consistent chronology of the sites, centered at 200-400 CE, but also highlighted issues with dating poorly preserved bones and wood.

Radiocarbon Dating for the Reconstruction of the 1717 CE Triolet Rock Avalanche in the Mont Blanc Massif, Italy

Irka Hajdas et al.

Summary: The Arp Nouva peat bog in the upper Ferret Valley has been studied using radiocarbon dating, confirming that it was formed by rock avalanche deposits blocking the Bella Combe torrent. Careful sample preparation was crucial in obtaining accurate C-14 ages and avoiding chronological reconstruction errors. This study highlights the importance of a combined geomorphological and geochronological approach in landscape evolution research.

Summary: The application of accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS C-14) dating in forensics is limited by the complex interpretation of results, despite the high precision analysis possible. Results of an intercomparison exercise between three AMS laboratories in Italy, Hungary, and Switzerland within an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) coordinated research project demonstrate high reproducibility and consistency in the experimental determinations.

Out-of-phase Late Pleistocene glacial maxima in the Western Alps reflect past changes in North Atlantic atmospheric circulation

Natacha Gribenski et al.

Summary: Paleoglacier reconstructions in the northern and southern forelands of the European Alps indicate a synchronous Late Pleistocene glacial maximum during Marine Isotope Stage 2, but strong controversy remains for the western foreland. New luminescence dating reveals two major glacier advances in the western Alpine foreland at ca. 75-60 and ca. 40-30 ka, coinciding with MIS 4 and late MIS 3, suggesting asynchrony in glacial maxima with the rest of the Alps due to atmospheric circulation reorganization over the North Atlantic in response to Northern Hemisphere ice-sheet fluctuations.

The role of land cover in the climate of glacial Europe

Patricio Velasquez et al.

Summary: Earth system models exhibit significant discrepancies in simulating the climate of continents at the Last Glacial Maximum, potentially due to factors such as model resolution and incomplete representation of Earth system processes. Through a coupled land-atmosphere modelling experiment, high-resolution models over ice-free regions of Europe achieved quasi-equilibrium and showed reasonable agreement with independent reconstructions. Sensitivity simulations revealed the significant impact of land cover on the regional climate during the Last Glacial Maximum.
