Rapid-quenching of high-pressure depolymerized hydrous silicate (peridotitic) glasses

Dmitry Bondar et al.

Summary: Experimental and spectroscopic investigation of glasses synthesized at high pressure provides fundamental information about the structure/physical properties relationships of these materials. This study successfully quenched, recovered, and characterized high-pressure hydrous silicate glasses of peridotite composition and demonstrated the effect of H2O content on melt polymerization.

Water Content of the Dehydration Melting Layer in the Topmost Lower Mantle

Hongzhan Fei

Summary: The study indicates the presence of a dehydrated melting layer in the deep mantle, where the water content significantly decreases with increasing temperature. This melting layer at a depth of 660 kilometers may lead to slab stagnation and inhibit whole mantle convection.

A simplified rapid-quench multi-anvil technique

Dmitry Bondar et al.

Summary: The new rapid-quench design has made significant improvements in preparing glasses and achieving a higher cooling rate by enhancing coolant circulation and considering the dependencies of pressure and temperature. This design produces over 15% higher cooling rate compared to the previous one, and first determined the pressure calibration and temperature distribution in the experimental cell and sample capsule due to its unique structure.

Thermal stress, cooling-rate and fictive temperature of silicate melts

Sharon L. Webb

Summary: The study discusses the use of differential scanning heat capacity measurements and limiting fictive temperature analysis to investigate the unknown cooling-rate history of natural silicate melts. Different processes during cooling and re-heating of natural samples, such as annealing, stress release, and matched cooling/heating-rate calibration, can impact the calculation of cooling-rate. Each source of error in the calculation can result in the overestimation or underestimation of cooling-rate by a factor of 10 or more.
