DNA/RNA Preservation in Glacial Snow and Ice Samples

Christopher B. Trivedi et al.

Summary: This study compares and assesses the effectiveness of three preservation methods for DNA and RNA extracted from glacial snow and ice samples. The results suggest that flash freezing of filters containing low biomass is the preferred method for preserving DNA and RNA, while RNAlater and Zymo DNA/RNA Shield solutions work comparably well, especially for DNA from high biomass samples.

Seasonality of Glacial Snow and Ice Microbial Communities

Matthias Winkel et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microbial communities from Icelandic glacier surface snow and bare ice habitats and finds that the microbial communities on glacial snow and ice vary significantly on a seasonal basis. The dominant species differ between summer and winter, with algae dominating in summer and bacteria and fungi dominating in winter. The bacterial communities in winter samples show similarities to airborne and fresh snow bacteria reported in other studies, suggesting that dry and wet deposition play a crucial role as a source of microorganisms to the glacier surface in winter.
