Alteration of gut microbiota composition and function of Indian major carp, rohu (Labeo rohita) infected with Argulus siamensis

Hemanta Kumar Mondal et al.

Summary: The study found that Argulus infection significantly affects the diversity and richness of intestinal microbiota in rohu fish, with an enrichment of Actinobacteria and Patescibacteria. Infected fish showed a higher number of unique genera compared to healthy fish, with significant increases in certain genera like Stenotrophomonas and Pirellula, and a decrease in Reyranella. The composition and function of the gut microbiota were positively associated, and the predicted function in infected fish suggested an enrichment in the synthesis of chitinases, chitin binding proteins, osmoprotectant proteins, and sulfatases enzymes.

Effects of acute deltamethrin exposure on kidney transcriptome and intestinal microbiota in goldfish (Carassius auratus)

Shun Zhou et al.

Summary: Exposure to deltamethrin induced apoptosis and immunotoxicity in goldfish kidneys and altered the composition of the intestinal microbiota in goldfish. The study provides a comprehensive analysis of the adverse effects of deltamethrin exposure on goldfish and sheds light on the toxicological mechanisms of deltamethrin in fish.

Toxicological effects of microplastics and phenanthrene to zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Kaihang Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastics enhance the toxicity of phenanthrene and have a synergistic effect. Accumulation of both microplastics and phenanthrene increased with prolonged exposure time, and the combined exposure group showed more severe effects.

Reprocessing 16S rRNA Gene Amplicon Sequencing Studies: (Meta)Data Issues, Robustness, and Reproducibility

Xiongbin Kang et al.

Summary: High-throughput sequencing technology is efficient for assessing microbial ecology, with bioinformatics pipelines converting data to OTU tables for analysis. The robustness of these pipelines, processing steps, and their impact on statistical tests need to be evaluated. Different pipelines in this study produced similar results, but discrepancies in P-values were observed, indicating the need for improved bioinformatics method descriptions and data deposition for reproducibility.

Combined effects of polyethylene and organic contaminant on zebrafish (Danio rerio): Accumulation of 9-Nitroanthracene, biomarkers and intestinal microbiota

Jinghua Zhang et al.

Summary: Microplastics are predicted to act as carriers for organic pollutants, but their carrier role and bio-toxic effects with other pollutants in environments are poorly acknowledged. This study investigated the effects of polyethylene (PE) and 9-Nitroanthracene (9-NAnt) on zebrafish, showing that PE could carry 9-NAnt into fish causing bioaccumulation, but in the case of coexisting exposures, PE reduced 9-NAnt bioaccumulation. The study suggests that microplastics with other emerging pollutants in chronic toxicity are probably next objects in future works.

The complement system drives local inflammatory tissue priming by metabolic reprogramming of synovial fibroblasts

Jasna Friscic et al.

Summary: Inflammation-mediated tissue priming causes recurrence and worsening of arthritis, involving molecular and cellular mechanisms. This priming occurs locally and independently of adaptive immunity, and can be enhanced by activating complement C3 and C3a receptor, along with other molecular pathways, to boost cellular metabolic activity and increase inflammation sensitivity.

TLR2 senses the SARS-CoV-2 envelope protein to produce inflammatory cytokines

Min Zheng et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the envelope protein of SARS-CoV-2 is sensed by TLR2, leading to the production of inflammatory cytokines, and the severity of the disease is associated with the expression of TLR2 and MYD88. The findings demonstrate the critical role of TLR2 signaling in promoting proinflammatory cytokine production during coronavirus infection, providing new insights for therapeutic strategies against the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Summary: The study revealed that Elovl8 is not unique to teleosts, but has a wide phylogenetic distribution. Through the use of CRISPR/Cas9 technology, it was demonstrated that Elovl8a and Elovl8b play important roles in fatty acid elongation. Further experiments showed the substrate preferences and capabilities of these enzymes in fatty acid biosynthesis.

Intestinal Cetobacterium and acetate modify glucose homeostasis via parasympathetic activation in zebrafish

Anran Wang et al.

Summary: Fish have limited capability to utilize carbohydrates compared to mammals. In this study, zebrafish fed with omnivorous and herbivorous diets showed better glucose homeostasis due to enrichment of the commensal bacterium Cetobacterium somerae, which produces acetate. Dietary supplementation of acetate promotes glucose utilization in zebrafish, and the beneficial effect of acetate and C. somerae on glucose homeostasis is mediated through parasympathetic activation. These findings suggest potential strategies for improving fish carbohydrate utilization.
