Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning for Upper Gastrointestinal Neoplasia

Prateek Sharmat et al.

Summary: Upper gastrointestinal neoplasia accounts for a significant number of GI cancers, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology shows promise in improving the detection and diagnosis of these neoplasms. Stand-alone performance of AI computer-aided detection and diagnosis has shown good accuracy and sensitivity in certain upper GI diseases, but there are challenges and considerations for its implementation in clinical practice.

Real-time automated diagnosis of colorectal cancer invasion depth using a deep learning model with multimodal data (with video)

Zihua Lu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to construct and validate a 2-modal deep learning-based system, incorporated with both white light and image-enhanced endoscopy images, in estimating the invasion depth of colorectal cancer. The results showed that the system had a high accuracy and could be well applied in clinical practice.

Endoscopists' Acceptance on the Implementation of Artificial Intelligence in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy: Development and Case Analysis of a Scale

Li Tian et al.

Summary: This study developed and validated a standardized scale to measure endoscopist acceptance of artificial intelligence (AI) in gastrointestinal endoscopy. The scale was developed through investigating endoscopists' previous AI usage and consulting with AI experts. After analyzing the collected feedback data, a new formal scale with four factors was developed. The results showed that endoscopists with a score higher than 50 tended to be accepting and satisfied with AI. The study provides a viable questionnaire to measure endoscopist acceptance of AI implementation in gastroenterology.

A deep learning-based system for identifying differentiation status and delineating the margins of early gastric cancer in magnifying narrow-band imaging endoscopy

Tingsheng Ling et al.

Summary: This study developed a real-time system to accurately identify the differentiation status and delineate the margins of early gastric cancer (EGC) on magnifying narrow-band imaging (ME-NBI) endoscopy. The system outperformed experts and showed successful performance in real EGC videos.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the use of the ENDOANGEL system effectively improved the quality of esophagogastroduodenoscopy and showed potential for real-time detection of early gastric cancer. The ENDOANGEL group had fewer blind spots and longer inspection time compared to the control group, with a high accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity in detecting gastric cancer.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
