Large increase in CH4 emission following conversion of coastal marsh to aquaculture ponds caused by changing gas transport pathways

Ping Yang et al.

Summary: This study compared sediment properties, CH4 production potential, emission flux, and CH4 transport pathways between a brackish marsh and nearby reclaimed aquaculture ponds in southeastern China. The results showed that although the sediment CH4 production potential was significantly lower in the ponds compared to the marsh, CH4 emission flux was much higher in the ponds. The increase in CH4 emission in the ponds was not due to increased sediment CH4 production, but rather the shift in the transport pathway to ebullition.

Probabilistic flood hazard assessment method considering local intense precipitation at NPP sites

Beom-Jin Kim et al.

Summary: This study focuses on estimating flooding risk from extreme rainfall at a specific nuclear power plant site and developing hazard curves for inundation depth based on external boundary conditions. By analyzing the correlation between flood depths and calculating mode values, probabilistic flood hazard curves for the plant site were obtained to support waterproof design and flood prevention measures.

Repeated large-scale mechanical treatment of invasive Typha under increasing water levels promotes floating mat formation and wetland methane emissions

Olivia F. Johnson et al.

Summary: The study explores how mechanical treatments of invasive plant Typha x glauca affects wetland carbon dynamics and methane emissions. Different management techniques have varying effects on Typha structure and consequent wetland methane emissions, indicating the need for long-term monitoring to assess the impacts of management on ecological function accurately.

Invasive Spartina alterniflora changes the Yangtze Estuary salt marsh from CH4 sink to source

Bin Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that the seasonal and diurnal patterns of CH4 fluxes in Spartina alterniflora salt marshes on the Nanhui coast are significantly influenced by temperature, plant development, and water salinity. Diurnal variations in CH4 fluxes showed a correlation with seasons, but not with temperature.

Morphological and physiological responses of Arundo donax and Phragmites australis to waterlogging stress

Lindokuhle Tshapa et al.

Summary: The study compared morphological and physiological responses of Arundo donax and Phragmites australis grown in different soil moisture regimes. Both species showed reduced growth and root length under prolonged complete flooding, but exhibited higher photosynthetic rates in Arundo donax. Phragmites australis demonstrated higher tolerance to waterlogging stress compared to Arundo donax.

Influence of land-use change and season on soil greenhouse gas emissions from a tropical wetland: A stepwise explorative assessment

Risper Ajwang'Ondiek et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that wetland conversion to farmland promotes CH4 uptake regardless of the season and increases N2O emissions during the dry season. CO2 emissions are mainly influenced by season, with the highest emissions occurring during the dry season.

Divergent responses of wetland methane emissions to elevated atmospheric CO2 dependent on water table

Yongxin Lin et al.

Summary: Elevated atmospheric CO2 can affect methane emissions from wetlands, with the response depending on wetland water table levels and plant oxygen secretion capacity. Plants with high oxygen secretion capacity suppress methane emissions, while those with low oxygen secretion capacity stimulate methane emissions, mediated by shifts in activities of methanogens and methanotrophs.
