Ash fusion and mineral evolution during the co-firing of coal and municipal sewage sludge in power plants

Ao Zhou et al.

Summary: Co-firing municipal sewage sludge (MSS) with coal in power plants can effectively treat the sludge, improve energy utilization efficiency, and benefit exhaust emissions. Experimental results show that the high iron content in MSS leads to lower ash melting temperatures compared to coal, and increasing the mixing ratio decreases the ash melting temperature of the mixed samples.

Comprehensive assessment of heavy metal pollution and ecological risk in lake sediment by combining total concentration and chemical partitioning

Zhenzhen Yu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the bioavailability, pollution, and eco-risk of heavy metals in surface sediments of Erhai Lake, with results indicating that BCR extraction is more efficient compared to HCl extraction. Cd was found to be the most polluted element, while Cr, Cu, and Ni were mainly natural in origin, and Cd, Pb, and Zn existed in both bioavailable and residue forms. Various assessment indices showed inconsistent eco-risks for different metals, highlighting the importance of integrating multiple indices in metal pollution and eco-risk assessments.

Spatial distribution and contamination assessment of heavy metal pollution of sediments in coastal reclamation areas: a case study in Shenzhen Bay, China

Qiuying Zhang et al.

Summary: With the continuous advancement of global urbanisation, humans have begun to overutilise or improperly utilise the natural resources of bay areas, which has led to a series of ecological and environmental problems. The analysis of heavy metals in sediments of Shenzhen Bay, China, showed that overall sediment quality generally met criteria, with lower heavy metal contents than other bay areas worldwide. The potential ecological risks varied among heavy metals, with As and Cd posing moderate risks and Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cr having relatively low levels of potential hazard indices.
